Attachment

It is said by the sages that death is so easy and simple. It does not demand any effort on the part of the dying. It is something like our going from dining room to bed room, they say. If that is so. then, why do we feel so sorry for an impending death which is but going from one body to another?

It is because we have wrong attachment with the objects of the world outside and we feel sorry to leave behind these objects of the world. Suppose I am sitting in the dining hall and I tie myself with so many ropes with tables, chairs, cup-boards. etc., and with all these if I leave the dining hall for the bed room, do I not court discomfort, pain and sorrow in the bed-room?

Similarly by sheer ignorance the individual ties himself with so many objects of the world outside that while leaving this world he feels certain pain and sorrow. But by correct thinking (detachment) he can cut all the ropes and free himself while leaving this body to another.

An Officer gets the promotion and is transferred from Bombay to Nasik. Generally it is good to get promotion and everybody feels himself happy when getting promotion. You will find that in this change of place from Bombay to Nasik, children are more happy because they think of new places to be seen and new fields for play and enjoyment. They have no particular attachment with Bombay and, therefore, they never feel sorry to leave Bombay. But worried is the mother. Why? Because she has collected so many things like empty Dalda tins, empty perfume bottles, old clothes, etc.. and the lady does not want to part with them and at the , same time it is impossible for her to pack them all up.

And more worried is the man because he has stayed in the same house in which he got married, with his only one beloved wife and in the same house were born his children, from the first to the tenth ! He does not want to leave that one-room house. He does not want to leave his friends circle which he has made around himself in the office and in the club. Why ? It is all because of attachment.

You can very well see scenes of attachment at railway stations at the time of train's departure. Here a few with tears rolling on their cheeks. there a few melancholy faces and again some running along with the train, making "ta ta" , and shouting "write every day a letter"! All because of attachment.
