Tirukkural-On Virtue-Not Coveting Another's Wife-Kural 144

By Staff

Thirukkural In English, Kural 144
Enaithunaiyar aayinum ennaam thinaithunaiyum
Taeraan piranil pukal.

What will become of a man of position, who does not stop to think,And enters another man's house with evil intent?

No man of position can stoop so low as to enter another's house with evil motive and covet his neighbour's wife. The implication is that he will sink to the lowest depths of ignominy by such behaviour. The case of Indra, the Lord of the Heavens, who coveted Ahalya and had her under false presences with disastrous consequences, is a warning for all to note.

This idea has been amplified in the following verse of 'Araneri'

Aranum aranarindha seikaiyunj sanror
thiranudaiyan enruraikkundesam-Piranil
pilaithaan yenap piraraar paesapadumael
Illukkam orungae ivai
