Tirukkural-On Virtue-Avoiding Idle Talk-Kural 196

By Staff

Thirukkural In English, Kural 196
Payanilsol paaraattu vaanai mahanenal
Makkat pathadi yenal.

One who habitually utters vain and profitless words is no man, but just chaff among men.

A man of idle talk is just chaff among men. That would be the judgment on men who glory in idle talk. The New Testament of the Bible expresses a similar sentiment when it says:

'By thy words thou shalt be condemned'
(Matt. 12:37)

The word 'Yenal' has been used most effectively here, in the imperative mood, in two directly opposed senses – negative and affirmative.
