Thirukkural, kural 253
Padaikondaar nenjampoal nanrookaadhu onran Udalsuvai undaar manam.

The butcher with knife in hand, cannot have compassion in his heart; It is just the same with those who relish taste of flesh.

It is no use distinguishing between liking the taste of seasoned meat and the slaughtering of animals oneself. The implication is that both are equally bad and such conduct cannot be consistent with compassion.

In Thirikadukam the meat-eaters' calm acceptance of the killing of animals and the propensity of his mind to stray from virtue', has been commented upon thus.

"Kolai ninru thinroli vaanum
Yaadhum kadai pidiyaadhaar"

(Thirikadukam-72)
