Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, in Srisailam, is the only place that is both a shaktipeetha as well as a jyotirlinga. This Jyotirlinga is so sacred that people from all over India visit it just to touch it with their h hands during the abhishekam as it removes the past and present sins of the devotees.

It is believed that the celestial couple Shiva and Parvathi appeared in the forms of Arjuna and Mallika devi on this day on the new moon and the full moon day respectively. Since they appeared here, they were together called Mallikarjuna. Tall towers, walls, and carvings catch the attention of the visitors unawares.

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is one of the 18 or ashtadasha shakti peetha as well as a jyotirlinga out of three such temples in India. Goddess Parvati killed Mahishasura by transforming herself into a bee. Devotees still hear a buzzing noise through the hold in the Bhramaramba temple.

This temple is home to five shivlingas that are believed to have been installed by Pancha Pandavas. A small shrine in the complex belongs to Veerabhadra Swami. He is an avatar of Lord Shiva. There is another linga which is worshipped as the older form of Shiva or Vruddha Mallikarjuna.

Devotees are supposed to take darshan of Sakshi Ganapati temple in the outskirts after completing the puja at the Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva has given an assurance to his devotees that liberation will be granted to those who devotees who worship him here.

Ganapati sits in a corner to keep a count and record of devotees who take darshan a of Shiva here. Since he sits here as a witness to the number of visitors who worship here, he is known as Sakshi Ganapati.

Even now, we can see Sakshi Ganapati as holding a pen and book in hand in a writing position. So you are granted liberation only after you have prostrated to Ganapati here.

Sadhus line up here every morning to whom breakfast is served by the devotees. From the Shikharam, the entire view of the Srisailam town can be taken. Nature lovers would find this a splendid opportunity to connect with nature.

About 45 minutes of ride away from Srisailam, in dense jungles, there is a temple dedicated to Ishtakameshwari, who is known to grant wishes. Visit it during winters especially during Mahashivaratri.
