Tapti River: The Daughter Of Sun God Who Bestows Spiritual Powers

Tapti is the personification of river Tapti who is the daughter of Sun and Chaya. Tapti river flows in between the Godavari and the Narmada rivers and covers Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Rivers have always worshipped for their significance and Tapti is worshipped as a goddess from time immemorial. She is a befitting daughter to Sun God and an amalgamation of beaity, powers and personality.

She was born along with Yama, Yamuna, Bhadra, Shanidev and Ashwini Kumaras to Sun and Chaya. Her husband was Samvarana and son was Kuru, who later became the founder of Kuru dynasty.

Once upon a time, there was a king called Samvarana who was attacked once by the king of Panchal. Panchal had a larger and well-equipped army which soon defeated Samvarana s warriors easily.

Samvarana had to flee and start living in a forest. One day, Samvarana was lucky enough that Sage Vasishta passed his hermitage by and invited him into his humble hut.

Samvarana prayed to the sage to bless him to get back his kingdom to which Vasishta agreed and blessed him accordingly. Samvarana built a new army and encountered Panchal in a battle. His brave fight led him to victory while his kingdom was restored to him.

Tapti, who was also a witness to the valour of Samvarana in his battle with Panchal king, fell in love with him. She was eager to find out if Samvarana is likely to think about her in the same way.

Samvarana went for a hunting expedition one day into the forest where he saw a charming deer whom he chased. After sometime the deer disappeared suddenly and personified into Tapti.

Her beauty ensnared the king and when he saw her gold like glow ( she was the daughter of Surya and hence the glow) and her impeccable charms.

He proposed to her expressing that he wished to marry her. Tapti informed him that she would accept him only if her father Surya accepted him.

Without knowing what to do, Samvarana performed Tapasya for 12 days after which Vashishtha appeared there and offered to take him to Surya to propose Taptis hand in marriage with Samvarana.

Her name appears in holy texts along with her importance. Surya was known to have given birth to Tapti in order to cool himself from the heat emitting from him.

Puranas and Dharma shastras say that Tapti was highly knowledgeable, wise with proficiency in a variety of ancient disciplines, was extremely charming and well behaved.

To top this all, she had a magnetic personality with soft and mild in nature. Usually, people chant the mantras given here. "Om Suryaputry Maa Tapti Deviye Namaha" "Om Sree Mata Tapti Deviye Namaha"

Importance Of Tapti: Both Yamuna and Tapti are sisters and both are rivers which are very reverently worshipped. She is known to relieve the devotees from water borne diseases, like cough cold and certain other diseases.

She is also believed to cure diabetes. With a glowing and calm appearance, she is the daughter of Sun, and very revered as mother.

She Is also worshipped by sages and demi gods to acquire spiritual achievements. She has certain elements that reminds one of the characteristics of Goddess Parvathi.

Geographical Information: It covers a large area in the State of Maharashtra besides areas in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Tapti River originates in Eastern Satpura range in Madhya Pradesh. The Tapti River is very conducive for agriculture. The Satpura Range is a range of hills in central India.

Tapti river is known by another name, Tapi. Being the second largest river flowing westwards, it is known as the twin of Narmada.
