True Silence

Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, Silence
Bhagavan Ramana, the master, taught in silence making it an experience with his devotees the essence of what real silence was. The silence beyond manifestation which words fail to express and experience hardly can define as it actually eluded the grasp of the one who experienced it.

Once a devotee who was observing silence presented a paper to Bhagavan with questions enlisted. Bhagavan's eyes swept the paper in a glance and shifted to the devotee's face. He asked : Is this silence? It is the mind that has to be silent !

Once another devotee indulged in prostrating to Bhagavan a couple of times. Bhagavan remarked : " Is this a gymnasium? Have you come here to exercise? If you would like to express your devotion, show it through silence ! "

The master thus led the minds with the rumble of thoughts that rise and fall as the waves of the ocean to sink in serenity in the depth of unredeemable silence. The silence that ultimately stood apart from experience and the one who experienced it.
