Heaven And Hell

From young age, we have been taught that heaven and hell are geographic locations outside us. Be very clear: heaven and hell are not geographic; they are purely to do with your own disposition, with your own mind. You carry heaven or hell with you wherever you go and so you find it wherever you go.

A small story:

In a kindergarten school one day, that teacher asked the children, "Where do you think hell is?" The children were silent for a while. Finally, one girl stood up and said, "I think it is in my father's room ma'am."

The teacher was puzzled and asked why she said that.

The child replied, "Because whenever I go to my father's room, he says, 'Get the hell out of here.'

You see, we carry hell with us and hell is what comes out of us in our words and actions. Hell is nothing but the struggle with our own emotions. Our jealousy, our anger, our struggle with our desires, even our pleasures sometimes, are all forms of hell inside us. That is why, even when you are on a vacation, sometimes you feel it is like hell. This is because, although the location is different, your mind is the same!

Meditation can take you from hell to heaven. It can create a growing awareness in you with which you can understand that you are carrying hell within yourself; it can help you go deep within you and see how your mind plays and creates hell for you. When this happens in you, you will automatically start being in heaven!
