Solar Eclipse 2023: Rituals To Observe Before, During And After The Eclipse

According to the Vedas, eclipses are formed when some impure planets overshadow Sun and Moon. Rahu holds the Sun and Moon in captivity, and overshadow them, and their positive influences. Thus a darkness is created temporarily.

Eclipse is referred to as grahanam. It means capture of a planet in this context. Eclipses have a devastating influence on not only planets and gods but also on human lives. They can also nullify the good karma of an individual and bring on suffering and pain in their lives.

Before The Eclipse Begins
Ideally you should be on empty stomach when the eclipse begins. You should fast for 12 hours before the eclipse begins so that the food is totally digested by then and remains empty. But drinking water is allowed during this time.

Before the eclipse begins, you can do the regular puja to god with prayers and aarti. Sing songs Although this is pre-eclipse, you must not offer prasadam to God.

In some cases, the solar eclipse happens before sunrise. So, the Sun should be glimpsed after Grahana rituals There may be times when the solar eclipse occurs before sunrise. Therefore, one may see the eclipse only after the sunrise in the morning. One should not consume after the sun has set on the previous night.

When Eclipse Is Formed In The Sky
You must not unnecessarily wander about, doing household chores or any other worldly activity. You should sit in a place, chant some mantra of your choice or sing devotional songs. Nirjala upavasa is what you have to observe during the grahana period. You must not touch your clothes, food, personal belongings at this time. Just when the eclipse begins, durva or kusha grass or tulsi should be placed on all household items so that they are purified and can be used even after the eclipse is over. If you have touched anything by mistake, sprinkle water over it after you take the post grahana bath.

Post Eclipse
Taking bath with your clothes on immediately after the eclipse is mandatory. Take a cold-water bath once eclipse wanes at the notified time, in the sky.

As soon as the Grahan period is over, you must purify yourself and then donate something which falls within your budget. If you donate with true and good intentions, the charity done, will get you doubled returns. Why do we offer things in donation?

It is significant as it is the way we express our happiness over the release of Sun and Moon from the grasp of Rahu. What would Sadhus do, when the graham concludes? They can't offer anything in charity and hence they compensate by worshipping the Lord.

The food that is already cooked and left over, should be discarded after the eclipse. Without equipment do not venture out of your home to take a look at the eclipse.

Taking bath post eclipse is a mandatory ritual. During the time of eclipse, darkness which is represented by impurity, prevails over earth. So to get rid of it, we chant during the time of the eclipse. Once the sky is clear of the eclipse, light of the Sun shines the earth. This event is to be celebrated firstly by cleaning yourself of the impurity by taking bath, and worship God and give away something in charity to celebrate the event.
