What is Shiva Manasa Pooja?

Manasa pooja generally means to offer worship mentally. Shiva Manasa Pooja is to offer worship to Lord Shiva using only the mind. It is very powerful and very effective and at the same time easy because one can perform it anywhere. One doesn't have to procure material things for worship as it is wholly performed mentally. Shiva Manasa Pooja involves a heart brimming with devotion (Bhakti) to the Lord.

Shiva Manasa Pooja Stotram and meaning

As the name goes, Shiva Manasa Pooja Stotram is a prayer or a hymn praising Lord Shiva, composed by Adi Shankara. It is a beautiful stotram wherein Adi Shankara performs worship to Lord Shiva purely mentally akin to performing with material things physically.

1) Ratnaih Kalpitam-Aasanam Hima-Jalaih Snaanam Ca Divya-Ambaram
Naanaa-Ratna-Vibhuussitam Mrga-Madaa-Moda-Angkitam Candanam |
Jaatii-Campaka-Bilva-Patra-Racitam Pusspam Ca Dhuupam Tathaa
Deepam Deva Dayaa-Nidhe Pashupate Hrt-Kalpitam Grhyataam ||1||

Meaning

I offer you an imaginary throne made of precious gems,
I offer you bath in the water of melted snow from the Himalayas,
With divine clothes studded with various gems,
With marks of sandal and musk, I adorn your form,
I offer you Jaati, Bilva and Champaka flowers,
I wave incense sticks
And I offer you the holy lamp,
Please God who is merciful and who is the Lord of all beings (Pashupati),
Accept my offerings made within my heart.

2) Sauvarnne Nava-Ratna-Khanndda-Racite Paatre Ghrtam Paayasam
Bhakssyam Pan.ca-Vidham Payo-Dadhi-Yutam Rambhaa-Phalam Paanakam |
Shaakaanaam-Ayutam Jalam Rucikaram Karpuura-Khannddo[a-U]jjvalam
Taambuulam Manasaa Mayaa Viracitam Bhaktyaa Prabho Sviikuru ||2||

Meaning

I offer you Ghee and the sweet payasam in golden vessel,
decorated with nine type of precious gems,
I offer you five different types of food made of milk, curd and plantain,
For drinking I offer you panakam (a tasteful drink) made out of sweet fruits,
I offer you tasty sweet scented water to drink,
I wave a the lighted camphor before you,
And finally I offer you betel leaf and nut and complete my food offerings,
Please accept these offerings made in my mind through devotional contemplation.

3) Chatram Caamarayor-Yugam Vyajanakam Ca-Adarshakam Nirmalam
Viinnaa-Bheri-Mrdangga-Kaahala-Kalaa Giitam Ca Nrtyam Tathaa |
Saassttaanggam Prannatih Stutir-Bahu-Vidhaa Hye[i-E]tat-Samastam Mayaa
Sangkalpena Samarpitam Tava Vibho Puujaam Grhaanna Prabho ||3||

Meaning

I offer you an umbrella for cool shade,
I fan you with a couple of decorative fans made of chamara,
I also offer you shining mirror, (representing the Purity of Devotion in my Heart)
I fill the place with divine songs and dances with music from Veena, kettledrums, Mrudanga and a very big drum,
I prostrate before you,
And sing various hymns in your praise,
But all these I offer you my Lord, created in my heart
So Lord please accept my mental worship.

4) Aatmaa Tvam Girijaa Matih Sahacaraah Praannaah Shariiram Grham
Puujaa Te Vissayo[a-U]pabhoga-Racanaa Nidraa Samaadhi-Sthitih |
San.caarah Padayoh Pradakssinna-Vidhih Stotraanni Sarvaa Giro
Yad-Yat-Karma Karomi Tat-Tad-Akhilam Shambho Tava-Araadhanam ||4||

Meaning

O Lord you are my Atma (Soul),
Devi Girija is my Buddhi,
The Shiva Ganas (your attendants) are my prana,
My body is your temple,
My interactions with the world are your worship,
And my sleep is the state of Samadhi (complete absorption in you),
My feet walking about is your Pradakshina (circumambulation),
All my speech are your hymns in praise of you,
Whatever work I do, O Shambu, all that is your Aaradhana (worship).

5) Kara-Caranna-Krtam Vaak-Kaaya-Jam Karma-Jam Vaa
Shravanna-Nayana-Jam Vaa Maanasam Va-Aparaadham |
Vihitam-Avihitam Vaa Sarvam-Etat-Kssamasva
Jaya Jaya Karunna-Abdhe Shrii-Mahaadeva Shambho ||5||

Meaning

Whatever sins have been committed by actions done by my hands and feet,
Made by my speech and body or my works,
Made by my ears and eyes or sins committed by my mind,
While doing the actions that are prescribed
And all other actions that are explicitly not prescribed,
Please forgive them all,
O Sri Mahadeva Shambho, I Surrender to You,
You are an Ocean of Compassion.
