As an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, Shani is the ideal judge who punishes people according to their karma. Lord Shani was born on Vaishak Chaturdasi Amavasya and this is popularly known as Shani Jayanti.

He ensures that people learn their lessons in due time and in the right manner. It is believed that he does not punish good people in his dasha, those who obey their parents, and dispense their dharmic duties to perfection.

It is his duty to teach people the lessons of moral values and dharmic conduct through punishments and encourage the good people by being supportive to them. By repenting for the sins and carrying out good deeds Shani can be calmed to a great extent.

Shani's orbit around Sun is very long and during every rotation, he visits all 12 houses of the zodiac. This visit happens once in 25 years and hence it is termed as Sade Sati which actually spans about 7.5 years each time.

Each one of us experiences Sade sati at least twice in life. It is usually believed that the third sade sati is lethal and rarely people survive the fourth sade sati.

As a slow-moving planet, Shani stays for about 2.5 years in a zodiac sign. The effects of Shani in a person's horoscope starts 2.5 years before the arrival of Shani and lasts for 2.5 years more after Shani leaves for the next zodiac sign.

Therefore, in total the period of Shani's effect on a zodiac sign is for 7.5 years during every cycle.
Shani is the son of Lord Surya (sun god) and Chaya devi. When Shani Dev was in the womb of His mother, Chaya was faithfully serving her husband Surya.

Due to the scorching heat of Surya, the child in the womb turned black. That is why Shani dev is said to be black in color.

Wearing black dress to Shanis temple can placate him. Black urad and black sesame are to be offered at puja in the shani temples. Fasting on Shani puja and on Saturdays should be broken by eating rice mixed with urad dal and sesame seeds.

Sesame oil is used for lighting Diyas for Shani. Black items, leather and iron are not to be purchased on his day, the Saturday.
Shani was cursed by his own wife. Though she repented it later, Shani remained ominous as per the curse. Whoever he looks at, will be destroyed.

His older brother is the god of death, Yama. The difference between shani and yama is that yama punishes or rewards a person's deeds after his death whereas Shani does the same thing while the person is alive.

He also had two sisters by name Putri Bhadra and the Yamuna Devi. Manu was his other sibling. The moment Sun saw the face of his child Shani, as soon as he was born, Sun got eclipsed the next moment.

Shani Sade-sati is the time when a person faces only difficulties like failure, injuries, loss of money and risk pertaining to everything.

Shani Amavasya is the day Shani parihara pujas or shani remedial measures are undertaken by the devotees.

Shani bhaktas do punya karmas on the day of Shani Jayanti in order to gain full benefits of worshipping Shani. On the Shani Amavasya, Shani appears on earth to bless his devotees.

As Shanis mother was always in the presence of the radiant sun, her womb turned black in colour, unable to bear the heat. Hence Shani was born dark.

When Shanis step mother was feeding him, it is believed that Shani kicked her while drinking milk. So she cursed him to be limp and hence Shani Bhagawan moves slowly in the planetary orbit. He is called Shanishchara or the slow-moving one.

Since Lord Hanuman saved Shani from the menace of Ravana, Hanuman devotees are never affected by the effects of Shani. Also Hanuman is a devout disciple of Lord Surya and Shani is Suryas son.

Hanuman resolved some differences that arose between Surya and Shani. Hence he does not bother the devotees of Hanuman.

When his mother was carrying him in her womb, she used to do a lot of Shiva worship, Hence the devotion passed on to Shani as well. Shani is a devoted Bhakta of Lord Shiva.
