Recently, the Allahabad High Court has ruled that a Hindu marriage is not valid without the 'saptapadi' ceremony or saat phere and quashed the proceedings of a complaint case where a husband accused his estranged wife of solemnizing her second marriage without obtaining a divorce. Saptapadi means taking seven rounds around the sacred fire. In Hinduism, seven pheras around the fire are a crucial and sacred component of a wedding ceremony. During these pheras, the bride and groom take seven symbolic auspicious rounds around a sacred fire (Agni) while reciting specific vows or promises to each other.

Each phera comes with a different meaning that is related to a happy and healthy married life. While In the first four pheras of 7 pheras, the groom takes the lead, in the last three pheras of these 7 pheras, the bride takes the lead while taking a vow related to responsibilities and commitments.
