Parshuram Jayanti 2023: The Secret Of Parshuram's Birth And Valour

Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated annually on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of April month. Devotees fast on this day for his blessings. They are blessed with personality characteristics of Parshurama, a man in whom righteousness and valour combined in a curious way that transformed him into a God with a mission.

Story Of The Charu

Once up on a time, there lived a Rishi called Jamadagni whose wife Renuka was known for her chastity. Renuka was the kshatriya princess and Jamadagni was the son of a Rishi Being childless for a long time, the couple performed penance for a long time.

Their intention was to give birth to the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. As a result of their penance, Lord Shiva appeared before them and blessed them with fulfilment of their wish. Once Jamadagni Rishi performed a yaga for begetting progeny. He prepares two charus, one with Kshatriya element (this was meant for some other person) and the one having Brahmin elements. They were meant for Vishnu and Shiva.

Charu is a sweet porridge which is a sacrificial offering that is offered to the Homagni as Aahuti in a yagnya. By mistake, Renuka, the wife of Jamadagni ate both charus and gave birth to this warrior ascetic Parshuram. He was named as Rambhadra by his parents. As per their desire, Vishnu had incarnated as their youngest child.

Parshuram And Shiva's Axe

By birth, Parshuram had the best of both in him, the sharp intelligence and knowledge and the valour of a Kshatriya. He was fondly referred to as Brahma Kshatriya by people around him. He learnt Warfare and archery tactics very quickly and grew up to be a fierce warrior.

To perfect himself at the art, he even penanced to Lord Shiva and asked for Shiva's axe as a boon. Lord Shiva tested his prowess at wielding the axe and Parshurama passed all tests within the wink of an eyelid. So, Lord Shiva called him Parshurama, which means Rama with an axe.

The Story Of Khanda Parshu

Once there was a fight between Lord Shiva and Parshurama. This was just a part of Parshurams training. Shiva gave him a tough competition to just test how far he had succeeded in learning the lessons. The fight ensued for 21 days. At one point, Shivas trident flew towards Parshurama and to escape it Parshurama sent his axe towards Lord Shiva which hit the Lord on his head.

Happy with his disciple's abilities at war, Lord Shiva embraced him. Lord Shiva also preserved the scar for a long time and since that day Lord Shiva came to be known as Khanda parashu. It is believed that Parashuram's axe is found in Tanginath temple in Jharkhand.

As usual, Parshurama showed all the qualities that a human being should imbibe to evolve himself to perfection.
