Navaratri is a 9-day long auspicious festival that is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her various forms. It is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in different parts of India, especially in the northern and eastern states of the country. During Navaratri, there are certain customs, traditions, and practices that are commonly followed.
This year Navratri will begin on 15 October and will continue till 24 October 2023. Here are some dos and don'ts to keep in mind during Navaratri.

Fruits
During
Navratri,
a
lot
of
people
include
fruit
in
their
diet
while
fasting.
Also,
eating
all
kinds
of
fruits
is
allowed
during
fasting.
2.
Pracrtice
Brahmacharya
During
the
9-days
of
Navratri,
it
is
essential
to
practice
celibacy
and
not
engage
in
physical
activities.
This
is
done
to
please
the
Goddess
and
gain
blessings.

Adding
Grains
There
are
certain
rules
to
be
followed
when
it
comes
to
consuming
food
during
Navratri.

ka
atta
or
buckwheat
flour,
Singhare

Atta
or
water
chestnut
flour,
Sama
rice,
and
dishes

as
kheer

buttermilk,

lassi
during
Navratri

during
Navratri
and
help
people
in
need.

Don'ts
During
Navratri
1.
Avoid
Tamasic
Food
While
fasting,
you
need
to
avoid
tamasic
food
items
and
substances
that
cause
addiction.
Tamasic
food
items
can
mean
garlic,
onion,
egg
and
meat.
People
must
refrain
from
alcohol
and
cigarettes
during
this
time.
Also,
eating
fast
foods,
packed
foods,
and
items
such
as
cornflour,
semolina,
and
rice
flour
are
prohibited.
2.
Do
Not
Cut
Hair
And
Nails
Navratri
is
considered
very
auspicious
and
therefore,
cutting
nails
and
hair
on
these
nine
days
is
prohibited.
One
can
engage
in
these
activities
after
the
festive
period
is
over.
3.
Avoid
Consuming
Processed
Salt
If
you
are
observing
a
fast
during
Navratri
then
do
not
use
processed
salt
in
your
food
items.
Use
rock
salt
or
sendha
namak
instead.
4.
Do
Not
Have
Negative
Thoughts
Avoid
having
negative
thoughts
and
engaging
in
actions
that
are
harmful
to
yourself
and
others.
It

to
maintain
a
positive
mindset
during
these
auspicious
days.

Neglect
Worshipping

Goddess

forms
