While the women who were at the helm of affairs, during the times of Mahabharata, namely Draupadi and Kunti, became historical figures of renown, some unusual women who served in the background were almost forgotten.
Many great women were instrumental in helping huge roles in the war of Mahabharata and in the lives of Pandavas and Kauravas. Enlisted below are the great souls who were unique and powerful in their own way. These ladies had mysterious origin and an equally mysterious life.

Here a fierce battle took place between Arjuna and his son Babruvahana. Babruvahana, unaware that Arjuna is his father, kills Arjuna. Chitrangada is believed to be Tara of Ramayana Era and Shachi Devi, the wife of Indra.
Arjuna was Vali in the era of Ramayana and Indra in his original avatar. She was a mystery woman who never enjoyed an important place with respect to Arjunas life all the way through.
Ulupi: Ulupi was a nagakanya or a serpent woman who was one of the wives of Arjuna. She married Arjuna in most mysterious circumstances. According to the Mahabharata, when Arjuna was killed by his son Babruvahana, it was this Ulupi who revived Arjuna using the divine gem.
Ulupi might not have had a important place as a royal queen of Arjunas palace but she was the one who revived his life and this gesture was responsbile for Arjuna's participation in the Kurukshetra war and the declaration of Bhagavad Gita by Lord Krishna.
Bhanumathi, Duryodhana's Wife: Durypdhana was linked to Lord Krishna through marriage of his daughter to Krishnas son Samba. Bhanumathi was not an ordinary woman. She was the princess of Kambhoja empire who was married to Duryodhana.
She was rather unknown overall, but she was an expert wrestler and well trained in the tactics of war. Their daughter Lakshana was married to Krishnas son.
Hidimbi: Hidinbi and Hidimba were very powerful and influential siblings who were living in the forest, invincible by all other demons. She helped Bhima against Hidimba when both of them were locked in a fight.
Enamoured by Bhimas looks, she expressed her desire to marry him. When Bhima agrees to marry her upon the advice of his mother Kunti, the marriage will be conducted between them and a son by name Ghatotkacha was born.
She raised him singlehandedly and brought him up to a great warrior who helped Pandavas at the Kurukshetra war and died in the battle. She also knew tantra mantra and other occult vidyas. There is a temple for Hidimbi in Himachal where she is worshipped.
Ghatotkacha's wife Morbi: Ghatotkacha, when he grew up, married a unique demoness by name Morbi. She was not well known in the history of Mahabharata but was an expert in Tantric and mantric practices. She challenges Ghatotkacha with a duel first before marrying him.
Ghatotkacha defeats her in the unarmed combat and married Morbi. Their son was Barbarika, who grew up to be blessed with a boon by Krishan and as a result came to be worshipped in the name of Khatu shyam baba in North indian temples.
