Janmashtami 2023: 6 Dos And Don'ts For Fasting: Janmashtami is observed every year to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna (who is the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu). This day is also known as Krishna Janmashtami, which is an important day for Krishna devotees. Two places where the celebrations are at their peak are Mathura and Vrindavan as they are believed to be associated with the birth and childhood of Kanha.

This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated both on 6th and 7th September 2023 and fasting is an important part of this day. The Nishita puja time is from 11:57 pm on 6 September to 12:42 am on 07 September. Also, Parana time will continue from after 4:14 pm on 7 September.

Janmashtami 2023: DOS For Fasting

1. Observe A Strict Fast
Devotees must abstain from water and food the whole day after sunrise on the day of Krishna Janmashtami. It is a waterless or Nirjala fast that is done on the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.

2. Create A Sankalp or Vow And Stick To It
Create a sankalp or take a vow with a pure heart and one that you can complete. Then you need to stick to it till it is done.

3. Consume Healthy Pre-Fasting Meal
Since the Krishna Janmashtami fast continues for an entire day, therefore, you need to have a pre-fasting meal in order to get proper nutrition. It can consist of fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. Stay Sattvik
On this day, it is essential that during the pre-fasting meal, one consumes everything sattvik. Even if someone is not fasting, they must refrain from any tamasic food and also avoid onion and garlic on this day.

5. Special Food Items For Lord Krishna
Lord Krishna is extremely fond of milk and milk products such as butter, ghee, yogurt, and paneer. Therefore, while making something special for him you need to keep these items in mind. Also, you need to include them in your sattvik diet.

6. Prepare A Special Prasad
Apart from making Panchamrit and homemade butter, you can make other dishes for Lord Krishna such as Panjiri, Seedai, Peda, Gajak and kheer.


Janmashtami 2023: DON'TS For Fasting

1. Avoid Non-Veg/Tamasic Food Items
On this day, you need to refrain from all nonveg and tamasic food items and also skip adding garlic, and onions in foods. Further, you need to also skip wheat, grains, and rice.

2. Skip Tea or Coffee
If you have beverages in the morning such as tea and coffee, then you need to avoid them. Even though milk is allowed in the fast, while you are fasting it is best to avoid these items while you are fasting. You can take lassi and chaas if you want to.

3. Avoid Consuming Oily Food
As per the tradition, before and after the fast, the food items are loaded with fried snacks and food items such as samosa, pakoda, puri sabji, etc. These foods can cause indigestion and acidity if one consumes them immediately after fasting so it is best to avoid them and indulge in light meals.

4. Do Not Break Fast Prematurely
If you decide to observe a fast or vrat on this day, then do it with utmost dedication and resist the temptation of consuming any food during this time. This is considered a very essential part of the day.

5. Use Separate Utensils
You need to make sure that the utensils used for food preparation is clean so that prasad can be served on them. These utensils must be separate from the ones that are used specifically for puja purposes and only sattvik food has been cooked in them.

6. Avoid Intoxicants
You need to stay away from not only tamasic food or non-veg items but also from intoxicating items such as alcohol, tobacco, and others that can hinder one's ability to maintain a clear and focussed mind during prayer and meditation.
