A neem tree is chosen to make idols of Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra and this is because dark colour is associated with the deity.

A pond, cremation ground and ant colony must be present near the tree and a snake's hole in the root of the tree should be there as well. This tree should be near crossroads or should be surrounded by three mountains. Also, it is mandatory to have Varun, Sahada and Bel trees near the tree.

During the replacement of idols, the electricity of the temple is disconnected. The priests wear gloves on their hands and change the idols only after being blindfolded. When new idols are installed by removing the old idols of God, then it is forbidden to stay there except for the priests.
