There are two pilgrimage centers for Goddess Sita, that bear the same name. One of these temples is built to commemorate Sita's birth and the other was built when she merged into mother earth.

The place where she was born is called Sita Marhi which is a place in Mithila, Bihar. The place where she merged into the Earth is called Sita Samahit Sthal which is in Bhadoi Gujarat. Sita Samahit Sthal is also sometimes called Sita Marhi.

Story Behind Sita's Birth

There is a significant story that is behind this sacred pilgrimage destination. The childless King Janak the ruler of Mithila, had worshipped scores of devatas and maharshis to be able to beget a progeny but was unsuccessful. Around this time, a terrible draught ravaged the land of Mithila and he was advised to plough the land in Mithila to see if it is good enough to begin a yagnya for eliminating the draught. He started ploughing the land from Girmisani, where he built a temple for Lord Shiva which is now known as Haleshwar sthan.

He continued ploughing till he reached Punaura, till his plough hit a gold pot, in the middle of excavating. Opening it, he saw a girl child beaming at him, an instant after which it started raining heavily. Maharshi said that his prayers had been answered with respect to draught as well as his childlessness. Since she was found after digging the earth with a plough, he named her as Sita which when translated means Plough. Sita grew up to be a personification of courage, purity, dedication, loyalty and sacrifice.

She had several names, like Maithili, Vaidehi and Janaki. Maithili means one who belongs to Mithila. Vaidehi means the one who belongs to videha. Janaki means daughter of Janaka.

SitaMarhi Temple

A temple was built on the spot where she emerged from the ground and that was named as Punaura Dham and the area turned into a pond known as Sita Kund the depth of which even 36000 elephants could reach. There is also a Janaki mandir, that is built magnificently. Situated at the northern border connecting Bihar and Nepal, it offers an experience you can never forget. The middle of city, you can find the river Lakshman, as Lakshman had bathed and drunk water from this river.

The district of Sitamarhi is situated in the northern Bihar. Dumra was made the district headquarters after Sitamarhi town was devastated due to a horrible earthquake which shook the entire city and the existence of people in it in 1934. After some time, this land slowly grew into a jungle about 500 years back and an tapasvi by name Birbal das had a flash of intuition which told him that Sitas birthplace was here, Birbal Das cleared the jungle and restarted the puja of Sita.

However, the Janaki Mandir is about 100 years old and no archaeological remains of Sita's time can be found now. About 1.5 Kms. Off the railway station and the bus stand, this is the birth place of Sita.. The shrine is thronged by devotees in thousands during Navratri and Ram Navami festivals. It is believed that this temple is some 100 years old. This is a fairly big and modern temple. The worshipped deities are Sri Ram, Sita and Hanuman. Janki Kund, the nearby tank was used by Janaka to give birth to Baby Sita and this had a courtyard and solar power facitlity. This place has a huge gateway, and acourtyard to welcome the devotees. Ram Navami and Janaki Navami are celebrated with glory and ferver.

Sita Samahit Sthal, Uttar Pradesh

Sita Samahit sthal, also sometimes referred to as Sitamarhi, is the place where Goddess Sita entered the earth with Earth Goddess when she willed that her avatar was complete. There is a temple constructed exactly where she descended into the earth.

The Sita Samahit Sthal is situated about 54 kn from Allahabad and 44 km away from Kashi, in the Bhadoi district, you can get to see the Sita Samahit Sthal which you should see if you are interested in knowing about SItas final departure from earth or how she merged into the goddess of Earth. It is a very popular pilgrimage destination and was built exactly where she went down into the earth. One more huge attraction, is the 110 feet tall statue of Hanuman here. To add to this, there is also a pond that surrounds the temple that attracts a huge number of devotees.

Another Test For Goddess Sita

The present temple is built at the same spot where Sita spent her days in exile in Sage Valmikis Ashram. She gave birth to twins who grew up to be warriors who encountered the army of Rama and defeated his entire force. Rama realized that they were his own sons. This was the time, he asks Sita once again, before accepting her back into his royal household, whether she will be able to go through another agni pariksha to which Janaki or Sita denied.

Instead, she prayed to Goddess Earth and requested her to take her back to where she came from. A temple was built in honour of her sacrifice. This place was later visited by Swami Jitendranath Tirth who wished to construct a lovely memorial for Goddess Sita. It was built taking help from people and it is built exactly on the mount from which Sita descended down into Earth and vanished forever.
