Housewarming: Be Aware Of These Dos And Donts

A newly constructed house is occupied after completing the housewarming ceremony with due importance to astrological considerations.

Entering the The first entry in the house is celebrated as hourse warming or Graha Pravesh ceremony..It takes quite some time to construct the new house and hence there are chances that the atmosphere would be possessed with evil spirits that try to stop any good from happening to the house and its inhabitants.

Hence they purify the environment with veda mantras and then get the house ready for occupation. Even when a new house is left uninhabited, due to delay in fetching tenants, one should perform purification procedure to reenter this and occupy it.

Houses built with bricks, stone, mud, cement etc has to be entered when it is Uttarayana. Housewarming ceremony, like marriage, should not be celebrated for more than one day. Any auspicious moment during the night or day would do.

Auspicious months for Graha Pravesh are given as follows. Magh month leads to wealth gain. Falgun month leads to progeny and wealth. Baisakh leads to wealth and prosperity, Jyeshta leads to birth of son and cattle, Karthik and margashira give moderate results.

In the months of Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin Paush celebrating housewarming is considered inauspicious and brings on loss, pains, and fear of enemies.

A new house should not be entered for the first time and gruh pravesh should not be done if it is on Tuesday or on Amavasya and dates are 4, 9, 14 and 30 (Amavas - no moon night) should be avoided and Graha Pravesh should not be done on Tuesdays.

Don'ts: Do not occupy a new house where the doors do not have inbuilt shutters, the roof is not covered, or Gods haven't been worshipped and homa has not been done and finally the housewarming ceremony hasn't been performed and the priests have been denied food after the ceremony.

Otherwise that house will present only difficulties and miseries. Therefore, living in a house should be started only after offering sacrifices and worshipping Vaastu as per procedure given in scriptures.

House Warming Ceremony: Don'ts : Holi festival is not a good time to do Housewarming ceremony. Do not leave the house empty after the ceremony. Place a Diya the entire night for protection of the home and its inhabitants.

It is a tradition amongst Hindus to let the family members especially the owner of the house, sleep in the new home for that night. On the Griha Pravesh pooja day, you should not leave the house locked overnight.
You must light a lamp to attract divine protection.

It drives away the negative spirits from there. A house left unoccupied for a long time, is believed to attract spirits which cause havoc to the future inhabitants. Don't leave the house empty after the grih pravesh event. Fill it with some required household stuff in the newly built home.

Housewarming ceremony should be cancelled or postponed in case there is a pregnant lady at home, or someone in the family or amongst close relatives has died. It does not augur well for the house.

Dos: Occupy the new house only after it is completed. Housewarming ceremony done when house has almost completed construction does not mean you can move in immediately after housewarming.

Break a coconut during the puja. It is very auspicious. Thoroughly clean the house before the puja.
The house has to be completely built first. The entrance and threshold should be decorated with flowers and rangolis.

For the muhurat puja, keep ready a lemon mala and mango leaves. Make a temple in the houseDraw a Mandala rangoli for the muhurat.Step in to the house with your right foot first. Blow a conch during the puja.

Get a Homa and puja conducted for the domestic peace of the family members. Heat milk in a vessel as an introductory ritual till it boils over.Always keep a portion of what you have cooked for the priests who conducted the ceremony as well.
