Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023, also known as Gurpurab, is celebrated annually on the full moon day in the month of Kartik according to the Nanakshahi calendar. This usually falls in October or November in the Gregorian calendar. The celebration marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. This year, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on Monday, 27 November 2023.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, in present-day Pakistan. His birth is considered a sacred and spiritually significant event in Sikhism. Guru Nanak's teachings, along with those of the subsequent Sikh Gurus, were compiled into the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.
His teachings emphasized the oneness of God, the equality of all humans, and the importance of living a truthful and honest life. His philosophy laid the foundation for Sikhism and promoted values such as selfless service, compassion, and devotion to God. This day is also known as Prakash Utsav, which means the 'celebration of the light' referring to the divine light of Guru Nanak's wisdom that illuminated the world.
