Situated in a quaint village called 'Koladevi', in 'Mulabgal Taluk' of Kolar, Karnataka. Garuda temple is the only temple where there is a sanctum built for him and hence it is referred to as Garuda Devalaya.

There may be a few other Garuda temples in other places, but here, Garuda has a sanctum which is why it is unique.

Garuda is a celestial bird as well as vehicle of Lord Vishnu with Immeasurable power and abilities.
Shastras opine that every weapon and accessory that Lord Vishnu wears on him, for example, Adisesha, Garuda, gada, koustubha, panchajanya, sudarshana chakra are all in actuality nityasuris or muktatmas who are liberated souls and saints of the highest kind.

Vehicles And Accessories Of Vishnu: Each of these accessories have taken birth one time or the other and are called in each incarnation by different names. For example, Adisesha was Lakshmana, and Ramanujacharya.

Hence the celestial weapons of Gods are also born once in a while to set the situation right and help the virtuous.

Legends:There is a famous legend that is attached to this temple, which is of great significance as it involves the epic figures of Ramayana.

This legend is about how Ravanasura, the ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, abducted Sita and took her forcibly in the pushpak vimana. On his way back to Lanka with sita held as captive, Sita, who was distraught, uttered loudly the rama nama.

This was heard by Jatayu who was at that time, flying in the sky. He swooped on Ravanas vehicle and tried fighting against him.

Though he poses a tough fight, Ravana, disappoints his attempts by chopping off his wings which results in Jatayu's collapse on to the ground.

This place where Jatayu lost his wings and life, is now home to the Garuda temple which is built right on this spot. This place Came to be known as Koladevi.

As Jatayu lay wounded and on his death bed, Hanuman rushes in to see him as Jatayu had called out to Rama three times. So an idol of Hanumantha is also found here.

Sri Ramanujacharya, over 1100 years ago, had completed the pratishthapana procedure for the Garuda in this temple. You can see on the body of Garuda, eight serpents dangling down from his neck.

They represent the eight sarpa doshas which are instantly cured by visiting this temple as per the belief of people who visited this place.

In kukke and other places, only one or two types of Sarpa dosha nivaran is done whereas here, all possible sarpa doshas are removed. Luck gets enhanced due to worshipping this Lord Garuda here.

There is a historical background to this temple where Garuda has Lord Narayana to his left and to his right, Mahalakshmi. You can usually find Garuda etched on the roof or top of dhwaja stambha.

When Garuda was asked to bless devotees who visit this temple, by removing the sarpa dosha, Garuda prayed to Vishnu requesting them to be on both sides of his shoulders so that he will be able to bless devotees using their power of blessings on him.

Then Vishnu did as he was told, and even today, blesses devotees with fortune and prosperity along with Lakshmi and Garuda carries out his obligations to devotees.

There is another legend, involving Arjuna, that says that his arrows accidentally caused a wildfire, and killed a few snakes due to a wildfire. So he was advised by Rishis to pray to Lord Garuda to eliminate the sarpa doshas.
