As per Garuda Purana, charity is something that yields tremendously positive results. According to the Purana, you can never feel the financial pinch if you have the habit of donating.

Big businessmen usually reserve a portion of the profits they get to just give it away in charity. Those people never go broke.

Importance Of Charity: Garuda purana explains why it is important to donate within your means.
When you are hard pressed for money, there is no point in donating to someone as it will make you poorer. Donating is not meant to make you poorer.

Also do not donate to get a good name amongst your community. Donating no doubt builds goodwill but it should not be misused as a pathway to fame Shastras say that your left hand should not know what your right hand has given in charity.

If charity is done in secret, it grants much more punya than imagined. Donating should not feel like a burden but one should donate only one tenth of his wealth to only those who deserve it

You should not forcibly donate and feel sorry for having donated. These are the rules for donating. There are some kinds of people who deserve it as per the shastra. Donate only to them. If you donate to a worthless person. It will have no effect at all.

Don't Be Miserly: Suppose you have earned a good amount of money don't be a miser. If you are able to help someone, go ahead and help them. This good turn will only come back manifold as punya.

Teach Your Children Samskara: Parents should understand the value of samskara. If children are not taught to be cultured right from the beginning, they will embarrass you by their wayward behaviour sometime later.

So let noble thoughts come to your child from all sides and let doing good to others become a habit with your child.

Don't Blame Others To Gain Advantage: Do not try to pose as virtuous by putting the blame on others. Do not harm others just for the sake of benefit.

That inflicts sin on you. Most of us are experts in blaming others for their mistakes. When you use others to your benefit, it may make happy for a while, but the sin will catch up with you some time or the other and teaches you a lesson to learn.

Keep Good Company: Your character can be known by the company you keep. Associating with a person can change you to gradually imbibe his traits.

Befriending bad people will turn you into a bad person. We should always associate with the good. That will elevate our status our position and prestige in society.

In a long-standing marriage, a wife slowly grows to be similar to her husband in many respects. The personality of the couple gets influenced by each other traits and they grow up to be similar in tastes etc over time. They call it as "sahavasa dosha" in Indian cultural terminology.
