When Is Raksha Bandhan 2025? Avoid This Inauspicious Time Before You Tie The Rakhi
Raksha Bandhan is a day that draws attention to one of the most meaningful relationships in many people's lives-that between siblings. The act of tying a thread may seem small, but it carries with it trust, care, and tradition. While the festival centres around personal bonds, its rituals follow precise timings set by the lunar calendar.
When Is Raksha Bandhan In 2025?
This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on Saturday, 9th August. As per the Hindu calendar, the festival is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Shravan (usually July-August).
While the full moon begins at 2:12 PM on 8th August and ends at 1:21 PM on 9th August, Hindu customs follow the rising moon period (Udya Tithi) to decide the date. Since the full moon is still in effect during sunrise on 9th August, that is considered the correct day for Raksha Bandhan.
Is There A Bhadra Period To Avoid?
Yes but this year, you don't need to worry. In Hindu belief, the Bhadra phase is an inauspicious time and rituals like tying the Rakhi should be avoided during it. In 2025, Bhadra will be present from 2:12 PM on 8th August until 1:52 AM on 9th August. Since it ends before dawn on Raksha Bandhan, the entire morning remains clear for the ceremony.
Best Time To Tie The Rakhi (Auspicious Timings)
If you're planning to follow the traditional schedule, here are the best windows to perform the Rakhi ritual:
Main Auspicious Period (Shubh Muhurat): 5:35 AM to 1:24 PM on 9th August
Highly Favourable Moment (Abhijit Muhurat): 12:00 PM to 12:53 PM
Many sisters choose to fast until the Rakhi is tied, making these timings particularly significant.
What Happens During The Rakhi Ritual?
The ceremony may differ slightly across regions, but the core steps remain the same:
- The sister prepares a ceremonial plate (thali) with the Rakhi, vermilion (roli), unbroken rice grains (akshat), sweets, and a small lamp.
- She places a tilak (mark) on her brother's forehead, followed by a few rice grains.
- She then ties the Rakhi on his wrist and may recite a traditional blessing.
- The brother, in return, gives a gift or money, and may offer a promise of support or protection.
What Does The Raksha Bandhan Mantra Mean?
The traditional Sanskrit verse chanted while tying the Rakhi is: "Yena baddho Bali raja danavendro mahabalah, tena tvam api badhnami, raksha ma chala ma chala."
This translates to: "Just as the powerful king Bali was bound by this sacred thread, I now tie it on you. May this bond remain firm, and may it offer you protection always."
It symbolises strength, devotion, and the protective nature of the sibling bond.
How Long Should The Rakhi Be Worn?
There's no strict rule. Traditionally, the Rakhi can be removed after 24 hours or on Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, which follows soon after. Some people prefer to wear it until it naturally falls off as a sign of respect or affection.
Raksha Bandhan is a reaffirmation of the love, protection, and emotional bond shared between siblings. Whether you're following every astrological detail or simply tying the Rakhi with heartfelt emotion, what matters most is the intention behind it. As 9th August approaches, may your celebrations be filled with warmth, blessings, and memories that linger long after the Rakhi thread fades.
