Managing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 : The Smart Approach Of Ensuring Safety With AI

The Maha Kumbh Mela, a colossal spiritual gathering in Prayagraj, India, draws millions of devotees each year, making crowd management and safety a herculean task. This year, authorities have turned to cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced fire fighting systems to manage this immense event more effectively. The implementation of AI-driven crowd management and rapid-response fire safety measures at the Maha Kumbh Mela marks a new era in public safety at large-scale events.

AI-Driven Crowd Management : A Groundbreaking Approach

With an estimated daily attendance of 50 to 60 lakh people, and surges of up to 3.5 crore on key bathing days, crowd management at Maha Kumbh Mela has always been a complex challenge. To tackle this, authorities have deployed approximately 2,700 CCTV cameras, with 1,800 strategically placed within the fairgrounds. These cameras are powered by AI, enabling real-time monitoring of crowd movements and predictive analytics to estimate crowd density.

Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, who oversees the Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC), hailed this initiative as the first of its kind in the world. The AI system is not only able to estimate crowd density but also assists in emergency evacuation scenarios. In one notable incident, AI played a crucial role in swiftly evacuating affected areas during a fire.

This real-time surveillance network, manned by 400 personnel across four ICCCs, ensures safety, crime prevention, and smooth crowd flow. The AI technology helps predict potential congestion points, enabling authorities to divert people proactively and prevent overcrowding at entry points.

Advanced Fire Safety Measures For A Safer Maha Kumbh Mela

Fire safety is another critical concern in the Maha Kumbh Mela, with its sprawling 25 km radius and temporary structures like bamboo and straw huts. On Sunday, a fire that could have been disastrous was quickly contained, thanks to an advanced fire fighting system. The blaze was detected by thermal imaging cameras installed on one of 52 watch towers. Within minutes, a fire vehicle was dispatched, followed by additional fire vehicles and a dedicated rescue team.

The Mela's fire safety infrastructure is impressive, with 50 fire stations, 20 fire posts, and 80 fire bikers patrolling the grounds. The firefighting fleet includes 351 vehicles, equipped with modern technologies like Articulating Water Towers (AWTs), featuring thermal imaging cameras that aid in tackling fires in complex structures.

A coordinated response from the fire department, police, and other agencies ensured the fire was swiftly contained. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of thousands of people.

Collaborative Efforts And The Need For Continuous Innovation

The successful management of the fire incident highlights the importance of collaboration between various agencies, including the police, fire department, and disaster response forces. This teamwork, combined with the strategic deployment of technology, ensured a quick and effective resolution.

An official inquiry has been initiated to determine the fire's cause, with preliminary investigations suggesting it may have been caused by a gas cylinder leak or an electrical fault.
