Gudi Padwa 2023: Date, Time, HIstory, Significance And Celebrations
It is a common feature of any Gudi Padwa festival to see processions of brightly dressed men and women in traditional attire, wildly dancing to the vibrant Lezim, to the songs of Valour of Shivaji Maharaj. It may be common but every time it is a charging display of power packed emotions.

Gudi has stood as a symbol of victories after victories, starting from the time of creation, to Ramayana to the present. once up on a time world was struck by a deluge that swamped the entire area and Lord Brahma had to intervene and begin his creation from scratch. This holy day was called Gudi Padwa. Gudi for the same reason is known as Brahma Dhwaja as it celebrates the day of creation by Brahma.

Gudi Padwa is made up of two words, in which 'Gudi' means 'the flag of victory' and 'Padwa' means 'anticipation'. On this day a gudi is made and hoisted and it is worshipped. Along with Chaitra Navratri, the Hindu New Year also begins from this day. Processions are also taken out at many places in certain states on this day. Gudi Padwa 2023: What Is Gudi?
Gudi is a stick that is decorated with a bright cloth, neem twigs, and garlands which symbolizes not just the victories but also dispels evil spirits. Yellow hue used in the cloth represents satva guna which kills ignorance. Green and saffron represent life, which Brahma created, twig of mango leaves represents immortality. Red flowers indicate the annihilation of evil forces, whereas sugar crystals show sattva guna and Lord Rama was an example of this. He never bad mouthed his enemies as well. It is a day for new beginnings, new ventures, and a day that dispels negativity, and spells happiness and success.
Gudi Padwa 2023: Rituals
For this festival, people clean their homes and on the day of the festival make beautiful Rangolis and decorate the houses in the courtyard and outside. Flowers and leaves of the mango trees are specially used to decorate homes. On this day Gudi is hoisted and beautiful Gudi Padwa Rangoli is made around the Gudi. On this day Lord Vishnu, Sri Brahma and Ishta Dev are worshipped.Womenfolk wear traditional Nauvari sarees on this day that is essentially meant for bonding and togetherness with loved ones and friends.Multihued rangolis and flowers strewn on the patterns create a feast for the eyes.
Gudi Padwa 2023: History And Significance
Gudi Padwa is considered to mark the beginning of the new year. It is believed that on the day of Gudi Padwa i.e. Pratipada year, Brahma ji created the world, hence this date is considered to be the best. The beginning of Satya Yuga is also considered from this day. It is considered a very holy day. This festival is considered to bring happiness and prosperity. Another religious belief about Gudi Padwa is that on this day Lord Shri Ram had freed the people of South from the atrocities of Bali, in whose happiness people hoisted victory flags.
