Significance Of Easter Sunday
Easter symbolises the very core of Christianity. We celebrate Easter to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, signifying the ultimate triumph of good over evil and the defeat of man’s greatest enemy, death. In this article, Boldsky discusses the significance of Easter Sunday and why is it celebrated.
Even though Easter is a Christian festival, it has its roots in many pagan beliefs and customs. Many of the traditional gifts of Easter signify the coming of spring and the celebration of fertility and rebirth. It is one of the most important occasions when the family gather together and share the joy of togetherness.
The festival of Easter is also closely related to the Jewish Passover. Christianity has its beginnings in Judaism. Jesus and his 12 disciples were all Jews. The culmination of the Easter season begins with the Palm Sunday commemorating the Jesus’ kingly arrival at the city of Jerusalem. The following week is celebrated as Holy week consisting of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Here we may discuss about the Easter Sunday significance and why is Easter Sunday celebrated.

Season of Lent: In the Western church, Easter season includes 40 days of abstinence preceding Easter Sunday known as the season of Lent.
Triumph of good over evil: Triumph of good over evil is the answer for why is Easter Sunday celebrated. With His death, Jesus paid penance for the sin of mankind and with His resurrection, He triumphed over evil and gave rebirth to all who believed in Him.
Eternal life: Death is a reality that has to be faced by all men in this world. Yet, in most religions, we believe in an afterlife. The hope of eternal life is another answer for the question why is Easter Sunday celebrated.
Centre point of Christianity: Easter Sunday significance is the very essence of Christianity. According to St. Paul, the Christian faith is fruitless if there had been no resurrection of Jesus Christ and hence, the importance of Easter.
Rebirth and renewal: Easter Sunday significance was even before the advent of Christianity, a festival celebrated during this time to signify rebirth and renewal, a celebration of the coming of spring after the winter.
New fire and new water: In many Christian churches, before the Easter mass at sunrise, there is blessing of new water and lighting of the paschal candle. The Easter Sunday significance of these is resurrection of Jesus and beginning of new life.
Pagan supplements: Many of the traditions of Easter like the Easter bunny and giving of Easter eggs have been supplemented from pagan beliefs. Pagans celebrate fertility and rebirth as Easter Sunday significance.
Spring and fertility: The very term of Easter has meanings related to spring and fertility. Easter Sunday significance for non-Christians often denotes the coming of spring and rebirth. Fertility also plays a marked role here.
Movable feast: The date for Easter is not fixed by the civil calendar and this is due to Easter Sunday significance related to Jewish traditions. The first Sunday after the paschal full moon following spring equinox is celebrated as Easter Sunday.
