Also known as the 'Athens of the east,", the Meenakshi Temple is one of the oldest in terms of historicity and architecture. It is the most visited temple in South India.
Madurai Meenakshi is a deity around whom several Carnatic music keertans are composed. Madurai city has been adjudged as an ancient and holy city due to her benign presence.

Hall Of Thousand Pillars: The hall of thousand pillars is a monolithic structure. Several paintings adorn the hall and you can also find huge statues of Sivakami and Nataraja.
Gopurams: There are 12 huge gopurams out of which four inner gopurams serve as its entrances. They are reconstructed once in every 12 years.
Golden Lotus Pond: There is a pond in Meenakshi Temple that is known as 'The Golden Lotus Pond'. The lotuses that grow here have a shade of gold in them.
It is located near the centre of the complex where devotees bathe themselves. This tank does not have any fish in it in accordance with Shivas promise that no fish would ever swim here.
Construction Of The Temple: This temple was constructed by Kulashekara Pandyan. The Meenakshi temple was almost completely destroyed by the Islamic conqueror Malikkafur. The present structure was built by Nayakas, in 16th century.
Parrot In The Hand: IT is believed to bring luck. It is seen sitting on her left shoulders,. The Kili Mandapam or the parrot mandapam in the Madurai Meenakshi temple has a good collection of parrots in it.
The 33000 Sculptures: The wonderful thing about this palace is that all the pillars actually have 985 beautifully decorated columns.
These pillars are called musical pillars and when you tap it, they produce swaras or notes of music At the roof of the entrance, you can find sculptures that stand for the 60 years of the Tamilian Calendar.
The Idol Of Meenakshi: The deity Meenakshi has been carved in emerald shaded stone and the idol has surprisingly three breasts. Legends say that the third breast vanished when she found her suitor in Shiva.
Resemblance With Temple Of Athens: Madurai city is built in the form of a lotus around this temple. This temple shares similar architectural style and alleyway with the temple at Athens.
Shakti Peeth: Meenakshi temple is a direct and the only shakti peeth temple which has 4 towers. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the main shrine of the temple. They can however have a look at the sculptures, 1000 Pillars and the shops.
Form Of Raja Matangi: Goddess Meenakshi of Madurai is another version or avatar of Raja Matangi Devi who is also seen holdijng a parrot and in a standing position. Modh community of Gujarat consider her as Modheshwari, the kuldevta of the Modh community.
