Vidur Niti: The Gems Of Wisdom For Successful Life From Vidur

vidur niti

Vidura was the wisest soul during the times of Mahabharata. He was the one with the highest sense of right and wrong in his kingdom probably because he was the son of Veda Vyas who granted progeny to a servant maid in the palace, as per Queen's instructions.

Vidura was the half brother of King Dhritarashtra, the father of Kauravas. He tried to help people by advocating his ethics. He had a keen eye for administration and politics and like Chanakya, he too has come up with sayings that help us during the times of trouble. He has provided instructions on how to live a successful life, for a common man. Here are the ethics of Vidura who existed before Chanakya's times.

1. Never trust those who are known to be untrustworthy. Rather trust those who deserve your trust. You can't change the stripes of a Tiger or make friends with it, no matter what, and one should keep off the tiger at any cost. Even if that person you know as trustworthy wears a dingy dress or behaves shabbily in a group, do not keep off this person as he is the one who stands you in good stead.

2. Anger and Greed open your gates to hell. They also corrupt your soul from within. Stay away from such tendencies ever, if you want to gain respect as a person. It takes you too deeply into the worldly desires, which multiply without limits.

3. One who can discern the good from the bad and choose the righteous path all the time, is known as a Pundit. They act as the conscience for the society and keep it operating on an even keel.

4. Knowledgeable people are those who do not feel elated or pride themselves for being great. They do not also feel dejected or angry on being disrespected or criticized. You should be equanimous in every situation, pain or gain, happiness or sorrow, should seem the same to you. Then you can truly be called knowledgeable.

5. Be totally equipped and ready to do any task that you take up. Halfhearted attempts reflect on the final outcome of the task. Whatever you do, give it your full focus and interest so that it turns out to be successful. When you are in love with the task you do, you have surely won the battle 50 percent. Having an interest in the subject makes it easier to learn.

6. One without self-control, and presence of mind, cannot achieve any success. A well-controlled and disciplined mind can work miracles or at least succeed in the intended tasks. Many successful people have a disciplined mind that comes as a result of a disciplined lifestyle and achieve heights in their field.

7. In case your gut instinct warns you about some person and you think twice before lending your money to him, trust your instincts as he may surely misappropriate your money and throw you into greater trouble.

8. A strong person with a quality of forgiveness is a rarity to find. Equally rare is a person who can donate even when he is poor. Such a person after his death, gets into the heavenly abode. These virtues are rarely found in human beings and people like these deserve to be in heaven.

9. A sick person always spends his money on his illness and experiences loss on both fronts, health and money. So having good health, is the greatest means of happiness for a human being. Whatever he earns goes through the channel of spending and finally he is not left with either money or his health. So avoide illhealth and be happy.

10. Never donate your money to a lazy person as he may misspend it altogether by his excessive expenditure on unnecessary and useless things. He cannot economise and conserve his money. This is applicable to some prodigal sons and daughters of rich people today who squander theri parents wealth and never learn to economise.
