Valentine's Day: Unconditional True Love Of Lord Rama And Sita

Valentine's day is arriving and the couples in love who are on a totally modern plane of thinking, may find that Rama and Sita's love story may not match the definition of true love of the modern age. However, true love is something that has existed from time immemorial, from the times humans existed, and the definition for this has not changed since then. Rama and Sita's saga or love is still relevant for all times and is ideally suitable to remember them on the Valentine's Day. Let us study the example of the divine love, of Rama and Sita whose true love towards each other was unconditional.

True love accepts the faults and merits of the other with equal ease and equanimity. The same premise that says that one should not expect from life but only accept whatever comes our way applies here too. The whole world may find fault with you but your partner fails to recognise it as such. Rama was one such divine lover who thought of Sita to be a part of himself so much that that the thought of sending her away to the woods did not occur to him as wrong. When Rama was asked to go on exile, Sita also left with him to the Jungles without a second thought, this is acceptance of love at the deepest level.

Rama And Sita As Gods, Born For A Purpose

Rama was born for a purpose, of slaying Ravana and freeing the world of his tyranny. Sita chose to be a nimitta or a pretext whose abduction was a reason for Rama to kill Ravana. Rama was a God and being a God, he was supposed to love every soul equally and provide justice to all. He was not born only for Sita but for everyone. Sita was just a part of his divine scheme for which he was born. In Ramayana, Rama clearly expresses that he does not doubt Sita even a bit and he just said Sita was in such a situation where she had to defend herself as the laymen who commented on her chastity would not believe Rama's opinions about her.

They would still object to it by saying that Rama was away from her at that time and how could he know what was happening in Lanka to Sita by Ravana. So the challenge was upon Sita to prove herself and Rama consoles her and prepares her for the test of chastity. He knew that she would come back unscathed by fire from the test of fire. Otherwise, he would not ask her jump into the fire without any reason. He would not have thought of taking such pains to bridge the ocean, pledge his life and save sita from the clutches of Ravana if he had suscpected her character,

They were divine lovers first and then husband and wife. Their marriage was a formality in the social context. Sita proved that even in mind she was pure, as she was constantly in Rama's remembrance even when she was in Lanka. Rama also proved his truth to Sita by not even thinking of another woman in his life. He maimed Surpanakha and sent her back when she came to him to ensnare him in her trap. Extra marital ideas arise in the minds of those who are not in love with their partners.

Pillars of Support

They behaved in a manner that would suit royalty as they were born in royal family and destined to play the role of royals. They were dignity personified in their expressions of love. Their love was deep and silent and rather expressed in subtle ways rather than in a boisterous manner. Each understood the others heart in silence, and just did what the other expected of him/her. Rama gave an equal footage to Sita in his life and never treated her as someone who was born to serve him as a wife.

He was not a male chauvinist who lived life on his own terms, oblivious of the needs of his other half. They were reflections of each other and extended fullest support to each other for upholding dharma. Sita also upheld Dharma as a cause she was born for and was not selfish enough to expect Rama to be there at her side, neglecting his other responsibilities towards people and dharma. She let him grow into a historical legend by standing as a pillar of support and Rama also supported her stand and treated her as the chosen one and the only one for him.

Difficulties During Exile

He took care of her safety and protected her like a shadow while they were in exile. She served him with utmost care not letting him know how difficult the forest life would be for a princess who was born in the lap of luxury. Both of them belonged to different kingdoms and different paths of life and were two different individuals who merged into one during the course of the life's journey together. They never complained about the vagaries of life, accepted life as it came and won the trials and tribulations in an astounding manner and this would not have been possible without each other's help and understanding. They were happy wherever they were, in exile or in palace, but always in happy togetherness.

Rama and Sita are looked as perfect couple in Ramayana. Sita underwent the difficulties in the forest just to be with Rama and Rama took care of her and protected her like the iris of his eyes. Both Rama and Sita had other roles to play as well to perfection. Both of them played the roles of daughter/son, king/queen, brother/sister and husband/wife in a way that set example for the rest of us.

Rama was the ideal man of his times and so was Sita. Some Girls in the modern times, are so independent that they view the marriage more as power struggle and not as partnership. On the other hand, Sita and Rama prove that love can exist even in traditional relationships and it can even defy the tests of time and challenges.
