Ram Navami 2023: The Striking Similarities Between Rama And Ravana

rama

When the true blue and valorous Rama is likened to Ravana, for a moment it inspires a painful comparison. Artificial gold and real gold both have the same appearance. It is only when the Gold is put to test inside the burning fires, does it show up its true nature of being 24 carat gold.

Rama proved himself to be an incarnation through the numerous acid tests that he underwent along with Goddess Sita. Ravana also showed his valour, but an incorrigible lust and foul play was behind Ravana's abducting another man's wife, Sita, who was the wife of Ram. Although at every step they can be compared, they show at every step, their real colour and mettle. They do share similarities, that are too striking to believe. Let us go through the similarities as we already know about the differences.

1. Uttar Pradesh was the birthplace of both Rama and Ravana.

2. Both had an illurstrious lineage, with Ram being a scion of Raghu and Harishchandras family, whereas Ravan was of the lineage of Pulasthya maharshi.

3. Both were exceedingly good looking and had virtuous wives. Ram had Sita and Ravana had Mandodari.

4. Both worshipped Lord Shiva. Both used to recite Shiva Nama always. The Shiva lingam at Rameshwaram was built by Ram when he was in exile. Ravana was the greatest Shiva devotee who was always absorbed in the puja of Shiva.

5.Their horoscopes were also similar. Both horoscopes showed Saturn in Libra, Mars in Capricorn and ascendant being gurus house.

6. Both names begin with Ra, Rama and Ravana.

6. Pancha mahapurusha yoga was found in both their horoscopes. This yoga is very auspicious with respect to earning glory, wealth, and fame and immortal name. Both rama and ravan live on in our memory, Rama as a meritorious God, and Ravana as a notorious demon.

7. Both were born under the Star Punarvasu.

Sita's assessment of Rama and Ravana was a little different as she delineates both their characters with examples.

1. An elephant and a cat in the forest
A cat in the forest just prances here and there and pounces without reason. No one gives it a second glance as they deem it totally harmless. It does not get any respect by people. People will not stop walking in this route just because there is a cat on prowl here. Ravana was just a cat in reality, not even bigger in stature than a cat. Shri rama was like an elephant which carves its own way through the jungle and other animals use this path to travel around.

Elephant does not harm animals and is not carnivorous although it is so big in size and intimidating in its stature. It subsists on grass and other things and gets its due respect from the other animals in the jungle. Ravana although king of Lanka, could not make the goddess of fortune his wife. Physical force does not win anyones heart.

2. Gold And Base Metal

Rama was the topmost currency in Gold, which glitters, sparkles. Gold always remains as currency in any part of the world much after the value of note crumbles, Sita Devi compares Rama to Gold and Ravana to a base metal. Ravana was worthless who dressed up to look mighty and invincible. Ravana is a bad person, who had cruel rakshasa mindset which was why he could not measure up to the King of Ayodhya.

3. Sandalwood Paste And Mud Paste

There is a difference between the paste of sandalwood and the paste of a mud. Sandal smells divine and is ideal to be applied on to the body. It has cooling properties. In temples in India, in south Indian temples they apply sandal paste to deities to rid the idols of the effects of heat of summer. But mud is something applying which Kids get whacked by their parents and have to take a complete bath in order to get rid of the muddy stains on their bodies. Even their clothes have to be washed thoroughly.
