Gudi Padwa is the Ugadi of Maharashtra which is celebrated under very different names in different regions as per regional and cultural preferences. It is known as Ugadi, Bihu, Baisakhi, Navreh, Naba Barsha, and Vishu. Maharashtrians call it Gudi Padwa. Gudi Padwa is usually celebrated on the first day of Chaitra month as per the Hindu Panchang.

People install Gudi outside their homes, or on windows or terraces and even conduct a small puja to it. It is a symbol of victory that started with Lord Ram getting coronated at Ayodhya, Shivaji Maharaj winning over Mughals, and Lord Brahma created the universe. They choose items for Gudi with care so that each item symbolizes many things. It is a symbol of luck overall and removes evil and brings prosperity. Installing Gudi helps you suppress and overcome your negative emotions like anger. As Gudi Padwa belongs to those three and a half auspicious muhurtas as per the Hindu calendar, people begin their auspicious ventures, like property purchase, vehicle purchase or jewellery purchase on this day. This is overall, very propitious for any new beginnings.

How to make Gudi

Apply kumkum to a kalash in a swastika shape. Sprinke some turmeric and make 5 straight lines on the Kalash. Swastika is an auspicious sign, Kalash signifies success and haldi kumkum indicates soubhagya, the longevity of husband.

Clean a bamboo stick and make 5 straight lines on the stick with kumkum or haldi or chandan. It also signifies power or strength. Bamboo stick is called Velu Kathi.

You can now make pleats out of the entire orange colour saree that you have and tie it to the stick. If you don't wish to do so, you could choose a blouse piece instead. Do not use jute twine rope to tie the saree but use any other one. Zari in the cloth shows prosperity to the family.

Tie small twigs of neem leaves to the stick with the saree. Neem leaves indicate good heatlh for all family members.

Tie Sugar candies to the stick which signifies the sweeter experiences in life. Stick the kalash upside down on the stick and when the Gudi is hoisted in this way, it should be visible from the right side of the house.

Now comes the question of how to install the Gudi that is ready. Use a chowki and draw rangoli beside it and decorate the chowki. Place the Gudi on the chowki. Fasten it to the place where you are hoisting it with a thread so that it does not slip off the chowki. The chowki indicates stability.

Using Garland of Flowers on the Gudi indicates a good omen. Place betel nuts in front of the Gudi which indicates the resolutions that you are going to take for the arriving year.

Worship the Gudi by sprinkling kumkum and Haldi and akshata. Usual Diya and Dhoop aarati should be done. Offer a coconut Prasad to the Gudi and pray. Coconut shows wish fulfilment.

Offer Puran poli or shrikhand puri to Gudi first as Prasad and then distribute the neem Jaggery mixture to everyone.

10 minute before the dusk do a puja to the Gudi by applying kumkum haldi and coconut. After taking it down, you can first consume the sugar candies tied to the Gudi as the first Prasad item.
