Read on to find out what were the events which led to this mishap and Lord Ram had to get Lakshmana punished in such a severe manner.
Vashishta's
Insistence
After
attaining
victory
over
Ravana,
Lord
Ram
returned
to
Ayodhya.
He
had
to
give
up
His
wife,
Sita
to
fulfill
His
duties
as
a
king.
One
day,
Lord
Ram's
guru,
Vashishta
came
to
meet
Him.
He
insisted
that
they
both
talk
in
private
and
nobody
should
interrupt
them.

A
Severe
Punishment
Since
Vashishta
insisted
on
complete
privacy,
Lord
Ram
ordered
Lakshmana
to
guard
the
door.
Anyone
who
enters
the
room
without
Lord
Ram's
permission
would
be
given
out
capital
punishment.

Durvasa's
Arrival
As
Lakshmana
stood
guard
at
the
door,
Rishi
Durvasa
arrived.
Durvasa
was
known
for
his
short
temper
and
curses.
He
asked
Lakshmana
to
tell
Lord
Ram
that
he
had
arrived
and
wished
to
meet
him.
Lakshmana
tried
to
pacify
him
and
requested
him
to
wait.
But
Rishi
Durvasa
got
extremely
angry
and
threatened
Lakshmana
that
if
he
was
not
allowed
to
meet
Lord
Ram
the
he
would
curse
all
the
people
of
Ayodhya
to
die.

Lakshmana's
Dilemma
On
hearing
Durvasa's
words,
Lakshmana
was
torn
apart
in
the
dilemma
to
interrupt
Lord
Ram's
conversation
and
face
death
or
to
let
Ayodhya
suffer.
So,
he
decided
to
sacrifice
his
life
and
entered
Lord
Ram's
quarters.
He
informed
Lord
Ram
of
Rishi
Durvasa's
arrival.
Lord
Ram
was
heartbroken
that
Lakshmana
had
to
suffer
capital
punishment.

Lakshmana's
Sad
Demise
Lord
Ram
was
known
for
keeping
his
word.
Therefore
he
had
to
follow
his
word
and
punish
Lakshmana
by
taking
away
his
life.
Thus,
Lakshmana
was
awarded
capital
punishment
and
that's
how
he
met
his
end.
