Shocking Facts: Did Gandhari Really Have 101 Children?

Mahabharata is an intriguing ancient tale which takes us by surprise every time we dig deeper into it. One such mystery which, we are sure, must have made you rethink the incidents in the epic and made you think about its possibilities. After reading the epic, the first question which is natural to strike anyone is whether Gandhari really had 101 children?

The epic mentions that the Pandavas were five brothers, three of whom were born to Kunti and the other two were born to Madri who was the second queen of king Pandu. However, when it comes to the Kauravas, they were 100 brothers and one sister. This fact becomes a little difficult to digest.

THE LEGEND OF AN IMMORTAL FROM MAHABHARATA WHO IS STILL ALIVE!

If we go by the laws of nature, it takes approximately nine months to give birth to a baby. So, if she had one baby at a time, then by the time she had the 100th baby, her first baby would be 75 years old. That makes us wonder how old was Gandhari when she gave birth to 101 children? Even if she had quadruplets, triplets or twins, it would be impossible for her to survive by the time the Mahabharata war ended. Giving birth to 101 children in one go is fairly impossible because even if she did succeed, the chances of survival for all the kids would be fairly low.

Then how did it happen? Are the stories of 100 Kauravas just a myth or was it a miracle or some kind of advanced technology which we are unaware of? These questions are extremely disturbing. Let us see what the epic has to say about Gandhari's 101 children.

Vyasa's Boon

Vyasa's Boon

The writer of the epic, Maharishi Vyasa, pleased by Gandhari's service, once granted a boon to her that she would be the mother of 100 sons. It was a mere expression those days to grant boons like that. However, in this case, the boon literally meant '100 sons'.

Gandhari's Frustration

Gandhari's Frustration

Gandhari was married to Dhritarashtra who was the eldest son of the Kuru dynasty. But due to the fact that he was blind since childhood, the kingdom had been passed on to his younger brother Pandu. This fact had always haunted Dhritarashtra and Gandhari and so they wanted to have their first child before Pandu and Kunti. This would make their son the legitimate king of the land.

Gandhari's Frustration

Gandhari was very happy when she conceived her baby before Kunti. But the unfortunate turn of events ruined all her dreams. Gandhari was not able to deliver the baby for two years. On the other hand, Kunti had given birth to her first son while she was on a trip to the forest with Pandu. Gandhari was extremely frustrated and she started beating her womb, frantically.

The Mass Of Flesh

The Mass Of Flesh

Due to the frantic beating, Gandhari finally gave birth to a mass of flesh. Maharishi Vyasa was summoned at this moment. He immediately instructed her to assemble a hundred jars with ghee (clarified butter) in it. Gandhari at this stage expressed her desire to have a daughter too. As soon as the jars were assembled, Vyasa divided the ball of flesh into a hundred and one parts and distributed each into the jars. He asked her to cover them and leave them, and soon she was the mother of hundred sons and one daughter (Dusshaala).

Many people have come up with theories about this miracle birth. But only a few seem to fit the picture. One of these theories suggest the method of in-vitro fertlisation (IVF) which is now a common phenomenon to have babies. It suggests that Vyasa knew of some advanced technology through which he artificially put the fetuses in jars and provided the right conditions for them to grow into infants. However, this is a far fetched theory which has been criticised on many grounds.

Another theory suggests that there were only two sons - Duryodhana and Dusshasana because quite evidently, we only get to hear about these two characters of the supposed 100 throughout the epic. However, we have also heard about Vikarna and Yuyutsu who were said to have pro-Pandava feelings, in spite of being Kauravas. So, this theory cannot be completely accepted either.
