What Is Sacred Feminine?
Most of us were introduced to the term "Sacred Feminine" by Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. The book became a major bestseller and a cause for much debate all over the world. Still, the term is quite vague in our minds.
History
of
Sacred
Feminine
Over
the
years,
there
have
been
many
interpretations
drawn
from
the
term.
Most
simply,
it
refers
to
the
divine
Goddesses
who
rule
our
lives.
The
strength
and
power
of
these
Goddesses
have
been
depicted
all
across
the
world
and
in
different
periods
of
time.
She
is
Venus
in
Rome
and
is
responsible
for
important
functions
in
a
human's
life
such
as
love,
beauty,
fertility,
prosperity
and
even
their
military
outcome.
In
Tibet,
she
is
known
as
Tara,
the
Goddess
of
wisdom.
In
Greece,
she
is
Aphrodite,
the
Goddess
of
love
and
desire
and
was
deeply
rooted
in
most
important
festivals
conducted
in
the
country.
She
was
a
God
of
Nature
and
was
greatly
feared
and
worshipped.
In
India,
she
is
Shakti,
referring
to
life's
energy
and
is
often
prayed
to
as
a
Shiva-
Shakti,
the
power
of
Shiva.
In
fact,
early
Indian
scriptures
such
as
the
Bhagavad
Gita
point
out
that
"Without
Shakti,
Shiva
is
nothing".
Another interpretation of the "Sacred Feminine" was that the female body was considered sacred due to the ability to give birth, continue life on earth, and transform her body to such great lengths. In many sculptures all across the globe, Goddesses have been portrayed naked, with her breast, stomach and navel given due prominence and this was to draw attention to her innate sensuality- as her ability to give birth was considered auspicious. In fact, there are certain pagan rituals followed, where a man mating with a woman was thought to bring him closer to God.
The Sacred Feminine also sometimes refers to the revolution to give women an equal role or importance in religious functions all over the world. There is a lot of evidence stating that initially, women were considered very important in festivities and religion, and were worshipped much more than their men counterparts. Women were given a lot of respect while conducting rituals, but over the years, their importance declined drastically and "The Sacred Feminine" was a revolution to bring back their importance.
What's
now?
The
most
modern
interpretation
of
the
term,
however,
is
to
make
women
all
over
the
world
understand
that
they
do
not
need
to
fight
for
their
rights.
They
should
not
put
up
a
war
in
the
household
or
in
their
work
place
to
prove
they
are
better
than
men.
Instead,
they
should
embrace
their
womanhood
and
inner
strength,
and
aim
for
a
life
of
cooperation
with
men.
Women
have
been
blessed
with
qualities
such
as
resistance,
loyalty,
multi
tasking,
creativity,
empathy,
etc.
And
women
should
make
the
most
use
of
it
in
both
their
personal
and
professional
lives.
