Tamilian Saints referred to as Alwars extolled the virtues of Lord Vishnu in their verses. A compilation of these verses is called Nalayira Divya Prabhandam These Azhwars visited various temples and performed puja to the deities there. The temples which have been extolled in their pasurams or verses are categorized as Divya Desams.

Out of 108 Divya Desams. 106 are in India and the other two are in Paramapada or Vaikuntha. Out of the 106, one is in Nepal and 106 are in India. 84 of them are in TamilNadu alone. The 106 earthly Divya Desam temples are spread over the Indian states of Tamil Nadu (84), Kerala (11), Uttar Pradesh (4), Uttarakhand (3), Andhra Pradesh (2) and Gujarat (1), and the country of Nepal (1) (Muktinath).

Srirangam

Srirangam is the first and the foremost Divya desam which is located in Tiruchirapalli, Tamilnadu. Srirangam is surrounded by River Cauvery on all four sides. Sri Ranganatha swamy is worshipped here. Tirupati is also one of the Divya desams that is present in Andhra Pradesh. The other is Ahobilam. Let us explore the Divya desams located in North India which the Alwars visited and worshipped.

Gujarat

Dwarka of Gujarat is also known as Thiru Dwaraka. Located in Gujarat, Dwarka is the famed capital of Lord Krishna during Dwaparayuga. Devbhoomi Dwarka is the only city which is a part of both Char Dham and also Sapta Puris mentioned in our scriptures. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, is also located at Dwarka along with Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple.

Uttar Pradesh

Ayodhya,, known as Thiru Ayodhi is home to Sri Ramar Temple which is located on the banks of the Sarayu river and is the most revered of all seven sacred cities. Ayodhya, being the birthplace of Rama, is a very important spot that is described extensively in the epic Ramayana. It is the birth place of four Jain theerthankaras as well.

Naimisharanya

Naimisharanya is a temple for Lord Vishnu that is located in Sitapur District of Uttar Pradesh on the banks of Gomati River. Also known as Neemsar it is one of the 108 Vishnu temples mentioned in the pasurams or verses of Alwars. The temple has been mentioned in Nalayira Divya Prabandham as well. This is one of the eight sacred temples that have self-manifested on their own. Devaraja perumal temple is located here.

Uttarakhand

Thirukkandam (Devaprayag) - Sri Neelamega Perumal Temple hirukkandam Neelamega Perumal Temple located in Devaprayag is the most celebrated temples in this holy land.. Located in the Garhwal District, Uttarkhand it occupies 103rd place in the list of divya desams. This place is also called Thirukandam.

Joshimath

Joshimath which is otherwise known as the Winter Seat of Badrinath, is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, it is the Joshimath that elevates the entire expanse of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand to a whole new spiritual level. God is known as Sri Paramapurusha Perumal . The town of Joshimath, also known as Jyotirmath owns an idol of Lord Badri nath, which has been brought from Badrinath temple to Vasudev temple at Joshimath. Badrinath

God at Badrinath temple is called Sri Badri Narayana Perumal Temple that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Located in Badrinath town in Uttarakhand, Badrinath Temple is among the four holy places or char Dham which you should reach via a long-winded route through Himalayas. Badrinath temple opens during April May and closes in the third week of November. Prayers during these six months is conducted at the Narsimha temple in Joshimath.

Nepal

Muktinath is known as Thiru Saligramam, and the deity is known as Sri Moorthy Perumal Temple. Muktinath is also visited by Buddhists. Located at an altitude of 3800 meters. Mukthinath valley is in the Thorong La Mountain pass in Nepal. Considered as one of the world's highest temples. You have a beautiful view of the mountain ranges towards the south of the temple and the sprawling Tibetan Plateau towards the North.
