Mantra japa is based on continuous repetition of mantras. Sound has a deep impact on our psyche. To progress quickly in the spiritual path, mantra japa is advised. A mantra must never be divulged to anyone as it loses its potency. It helps to practice it every day at regular hours. You do not need a rosary to practice the japa as it could be done in any position with out a rosary. There is a common misconception that one has to concentrate while reciting a mantra. But you do not need to do it. Keep rosary covered in a small bag when you are not reciting any mantra.

How To Internalise The Mantra?

Mantra practice, to continue it, takes a strong will and an awareness of the mantra. Over time, due to this awareness, your mantra repetitions become effortless and continuous. This is because the awareness and sinks to the subconscious level due to constant repetitions. Due to this, the process enables us to experience the changes in the natural course of events of our lives.

As the divinity is awakened with the repetition, it gradually acquires the Ajapajapa mode which means the chanting is continuous and it carries on without your being aware of it. Mantras can take you deeper into the meditation experience, and uplift you from the state of consciousness to highest levels that is, Turiya avastha.

Karma And Mantra Japa

It is widely known and understood that Karma has to be suffered and got over with and there is no remedy or shortcut to remove it from our karma storage. Luckily, mantra is the only tool that can alter our karma by removing them stage by stage. But it is also said that 75 percent of your karma can be freed this way. But 25 percent has to be suffered and completed.

10 Mantra Chanting Techniques

There are ten techniques for mantra chanting which are equally useful for the initiated. Let us take a glimpse at them.

1. Vaikhari Chanting - Here the mantra is chanted aloud so that it helps to bring back the mind from distractions that happen during the course of chanting. All you need is to hear the sound of your own chanting so that it is maintained in a continuous manner/ It removes negativity, and stabilises the mind. Eyes are fully open while chanting in this manner.

2. Whispering Chanting ( Upaamshu) - It is a type of japa where the chanting sound is heard only by the practitioner. Eyes have to be half closed for doing this meditation.

3. Mental Chanting or Manasika Japa - Here the mantra chanting is done mentally in silence. This method is prescribed for those quite experienced in meditation, like yogis. Eyes should be fully closed while chanting.

4. Nitya Japa - This is the kind of japa that is done daily without fail.

5. Kamya Japa - Kamya chanting is when the practitioner uses his mantra and its powers to fulfil his specific desires. This is usually practiced by most people.

6. Naimitik Japa - This is a type of chant that is done for the wellbeing of someone else.

7. Prayaschitta Japa - When you are guilty of a crime or a wrong doing, the atonement or prayaschitta chanting is done to clear your sin.

8. Likhit Mantra Japa (Written mantra). Here mantra is written thousands of times and helps focus on the mantra better.

9. Akhanda Japa - The chanting continues without gap or break in between. This involves effort, though. This slowly takes you to the next stage of Ajapajapa chanting.

10. Ajapajapa - This is a type of Akhand chanting where the effort is also not felt and chant becomes as natural as breathwork. It continues till death arrives. It is known to continue even beyond life.

The japa done keeping others in mind, with an intention to harm them, will not have any outcome. Only sin is generated due to this act.
