Dwarkadhish Temple :The Reason Why It Has Two Flags Hoisted On The Top

It is a common occurrence for the people of Gujarat to see an additional flag hoisted atop the Dwarkadhish temple. Actually, this temple is the one that was a part of the ancient Dwarka city which got later submerged under the sea.

Impact Of The Flag On The Cyclone:

Only the temple remained without sinking in to the sea. As per the local belief, an additional flag is hoisted on the top of the temple whenever there is an indication of an oncoming cyclone.

The people of Gujarat are of the belief that the damage due to cyclone will be mitigated if two flags are hoisted on the top of the temple.

The flags have a subduing impact on the cyclone effects and Krishna's hand is behind it. This flag measures about 52 yards and is hoisted daily on the top of the temple.

A particular category of Brahmins called Aboti Brahmins hoist the two flags at the same time during a cyclone and they see that they change the flags daily.

Incidentally, all the hoisted flags are given by devotees. The flag is changed five times a day in a fixed time. The booking for flag hoisting is done in advance to hoist it when it is their turn.

The 52 number has its own significance in the flag. It is the sum total of 27, 12, 10 and 3 which means it is the 27 Nakshatras, 12 Rashis, 10 directions, Sun, Moon and lastly Sri Dwarakadish.

Dwarkadhish temple is designed with five pinnacles and a flag is hoisted on each pinnacle daily.

When Sri Krishna left earth upon completion of his incarnation, the sea rose up violently to swallow the entire Dwarka as it was steeped in sinful activities.

Now, since there are cyclone indications, two flags get hoisted on the top of the temple. It is next to impossible to put a flag on the peak during the Biparjoy cyclone and hence two flags have been installed in the temple of Dwarkadhish itself.

Devotees believe that it is due to the presence of the flag that the perils in their lives and Gujarat are averted by God.

This flag now is inside the temple itself because it is difficult to reach the peak due to the cyclonic raging wind. So the second flag is placed under the pole.

Biparjoy And The Flag

People have different interpretations to the impact of the cyclone and the power of the flag to avert it.

While some say that the two flags are hoisted to mitigate the aftereffects of cyclone, some say that it is the first time in history that these flags are simultaneously hoisted due to the reason that it is just now impossible to hoist the flag due to cyclone.

Significance

Krishna's grandson was behind the construction of this temple. This is a 2500 years old temple that has two entrances, of which one is called Moksha Dwar and the other is called Swarg Dwar. This huge temple with equally huge pillars always attracts a huge devotee base.
