Dwarka Submerged: How Krishna's Dwarka Sank Under The Sea Without A Trace

Dwarka, like Atlantis, was the city that got submerged under the sea due to a huge tide that suddenly rose up and swallowed the entire city in one gulp. This was on the same day Lord Krishna left to the forests to end his incarnation. A mention of this is found in Mahabharata. First of all, why did Lord Krishna build Dwaraka? He was already in Mathura and ruling it.

Why Did Lord Krishna Build The City Of Dwarka?

As per Bhagavatam, there was a specific reason why Dwarka was built by Krishna. Jarasandha, the ruler of Magadha and the father in law of Krishna's uncle Kamsa was on an attacking spree and constantly waging wars on Mathura. Due to continuous warfare, the Yadava forces had reduced in their total strength.

Unable to bear this, Lord Krishna planned to set up another city on the western coast near Kushasthali. This city had around 900 palaces built, and these could house thousands in them. Finally the city could be reached by ship as it was heavily fortified to prevent entry of enemy forces.

How Was The City OF Dwarka Built?

Here is an account of how he built this city. When Lord Krishna once travelled to Dwarka from Mathura, he ordered Vishwakarma to build him a city that was impenetrable. Vishwakarma replied that he could build only if God of Samudra provided a 12 yojanas-long stretch of land to him. Lord Krishna prayed to Samudra Deva as a response to which Samudra offered him the required measure of land immediately upon which Vishwakarma set out to work and completed it in the record time of 2 days.

But Lord Krishna was carrying on the administration from Bet Dwarka, a part of Dwarka which was an island. Curious to know why Dwaraka was called Suvarna Dwarka? It was built in gold emerald and jewels and hence acquired this name.

What Happened After Lord Krishna Left The Earth?

The day came, after 125 years after Lord Krishna's birth when Lord Krishna left his Dwarka and reached the forest to contemplate on how to end his life as it was high time he made a decision to leave the world. He had fulfilled his obligations and responsibilities, and had completed his mission. When Krishna left his mortal body in the forest, the sea level in Dwarka rose all of a sudden, and the a giant tide from the sea, that rose up to engulf the city and then collapsed it under the sea within seconds.

Lord Krishna had to do this as Kali yuga had just then started and the people were gripped by the impact of Kali. There is also a legend which says that there was an aerial fight that occurred between aircrafts using advanced technology and heavy weaponry. As a result of this. a bolt of lightning was released that caused untold damage to the city of Dwarka. This is how Dwarka lived and lost.

When The Excavation Began

Coming to the recent times, excavations started around 100 years back in 1930s around the island area of Bet Dwarka, which is about 30 kilometres north of modern Dwarka in Jamnagar , Gujarat. A series of excavations followed and not much was unearthed. In the 1979 excavation, some pottery and a building was discovered underneath. The archaeological team was able to pull out 500 antiques, stone blocks, pillars, and irrigation systems.

The Dwarkadhish temple was built during the 13th and 15th centuries BCE. A thorough excavation in 2007 showed that location of Dwarka after the excavation matches with the location given by the scriptures. The old Dwarka was damaged beyond repair and a glorious yuga sank into the underwanters along with the departure of the Yuga purusha, Lord Shri Krishna.
