Aside from this, there have been hundreds of unknown and known saints, who have lived longer than a human being would expect. The best example for this Trailinga Swami who lived for 280 years on this planet. Let us focus on only one of them, that is Ashwathama, the bravest warrior of all times, who was born to Dronacharya, the Rajguru who taught Shastras (weapons) and Shaastras ( knowledge) to the powerful Pandavas.

Ashwathama's Birth

Ashwathama was a great warrior and mentor for Pandavas. As soon he was born he had reportedly neighed like a horse. So as per an oracular instruction, he was named as Ashwaththama. He grew up to be a master of 64 vidyas and 18 shastras, which is not a feat that is achieved by ordinary humans. He was born with a gem on his forehead that had grown into his skin and flesh and this was finally pulled out by Draupadi, as a punishment for Ashwatthama's killing of all Draupadis sons and using brahmastra to slit the womb of the pregnant Uttara.

Has Anyone Seen Him?

His next incarnation is going to be Vyas maharshi in the next yuga as per Scriptures. He may soon become one of the saptarshis after his Vyasa incarnation. He in his current incarnation, is a manifestation of Shiva. There are scores of instances of people in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Orissa who have reported to have seen him and talked to him. Let us go through some of these true stories.

True Incidents

1. This is a story from the past decade and there was a railway employee working in Gujarat who took leave due to unforeseen reasons. He had to wander in the jungles of Navsari wherein he reported to have seen a man about 12 feet in height roaming about the forest with a wound in his head. He also said he spoke to this man who explained to him that Bheem was much taller and stronger than him.

2. During 1192, when Prithviraj Chauhan lost the battle to Mohamed Ghouri he decided to go to the jungle, to pacify himself. As he was roaming about the jungle, he met an old person with a scar on his head. Prithviraj was a good Ayurvaidya and hence offered to cure the scar. Prithviraj tried for a week all the herbs and medicines, but it did not show one percent of improvement. Seeing it remain in the same position, Prithviraj, surprised, asked the old man if he was Ashwathama to which the old man replied "indeed yes" and immediately disappeared. This description can be seen in Prithviraj Raso, a 12th century book.

3. of Karnataka will have surely heard of Gadugina Naranappa. His name got immortalized through "Karnata Bharata kathamanjari" He wanted to write the original Mahabharat as seen by those in Mahabharat times. Praying to Veera Narayana in the temple of Trikooteshwar, for years together, finally he had a dream in which Veera Narayana appeared and asked him to attend the Dwadashi feast in the temple and follow the person who is quickest to leave the temple before others. He is Ashwathama. Fall at his feet and ask him to explain the scenes of Mahabharata. You will also get your due share of limelight."

He followed all instructions of Veera Narayana and found Ashwathama at last. Promptly following him and then falling at his feet, he requests him sincerely to tell him the story as it happened so that he can write in Kannada. Ashwathama agreed under two conditions. Every day a portion of the Mahabharata should be written in wet robes after taking bath. As long as the wetness remains in his robes, he will be able to write. Secondly he should not divulge his meeting with Ashwathama to anyone. The writing continued uninterruptedly every day.

But one day, when it came to Gada Parv, which actually explains the fight between Bheema and Duryodhana, where in Bheema wins by hook or crook. As Ashwathama was narrating this episode he got intensely emotional and screamed angrily. Naranappa was so happy to see Ashwathama in real avatar and he blurted it out to his wife. The next moment his writing stopped and he came back to his original self. So Naranappas mahabharat stops at Gada parv.

Where Is He Now?

From 3000 years Ashwathama is carrying his own cadaver, as per the curse thrown on him by Lord Krishna. He is suffering the pain of removal of the Gem even today. God knows where he is now. He must be penancing in those forests or Himalayan regions.
