Coconut In Puja : Is Coconut Used In The Worship Of All Deities? How Should It Be Offered?

Coconuts are a customary offering to god and they are broken into halves during worship by the priest. Actually there is a coconut remedy in which you offer them to god with an expressed wish.

Your wish is sure to be fulfilled. We have all heard that faith moves mountains and hence belief works like magic. We have heard of so many instances where an old man walked on a rope in lightening speed to the other end of the pole to rescue his gradchild and this was reported ages back in newspapers.

So, certainly it feels like faith has a place in our life and in the way life moves on. Ritualistically speaking, a puja is incomplete unless a coconut is broken and offered to the deity . But certain kinds of coconuts are offered to certain gods. Let us know more about them.

There are many puja rules mentioned in relation to worship in Hinduism. According to these puja rules there are differences in the worship of each god and goddess.

During any puja or festive occasions, we compulsorily break coconuts after which the puja concludes. At the opening ceremony of a new shopping centre, or marriage event, or vehicle purchase, coconut has to be broken. There is a shastra which predicts future or the outcome of the worshippers wish by seeing the way and pattern in which the coconut breaks.

Coconut is used in the pujas of most gods and it is a worship ingredients which you cant do without. When Vishnu incarnated on earth, as per a local legend, he brought coconut tree, Lakshmi and Kamadhenu along. Coconut tree was called Kalpavriksha as every inch of this tree is useful for man in multifarious ways. The holy trinity also reside in this tree.

The coconut was created by Vishwamitra when he was out to create another heaven. He gave it a human resemblance by creating two eyes and mouth on the outer skin of it.Coconut is called by another name, the Sriphala which represents Lakshmi.

Regular coconut has sattvic vibrations and hence cannot be used in vama pujas or the witchcraft pujas. We can offer this to sattvic deities during worship.

Lord Shiva temples do not follow the custom of breaking coconuts. Only whole coconuts are given and not the broken ones. Even the shell of the coconut should not be broken.

But you are allowed to peel it before offering to God. Tender coconut is used only for drinking purposes and not for puja.

Coconut is offered to Bhairav Nath in a unique way. It is firstly offered to him, then broken, Kumkum is applied to it, and pepper and cloves are placed in the middle of it. This is the prasad that should be offered to Bhairav.

If you like to offer a coconut to Lakshmi and Narayana together, offer it as a whole piece and not break it into two before offering it them.

It should be unbroken. The Jutti coconut is offered to tamasic deities only. But it can also be offered to Hanuman.
