On the back side of the Kedarnath Temple of Lord Shiva, lies the Samadhi of Adi Shankara, the saint who spotted Chota Char dham during his journey in the Himalayas. He hailed from the southernmost tip of India, that is Kalati, in Kerala and devoted his entire life span to propagating of Advaita siddhantha.

Char Dham Yatra 2023: Tips For Journey

He established the Char Dhams that later grew to become a sacred pilgrimage centre for devout Hindus. The samadhi of Adi Shankara interests those who have heard of him and know about his personality, life and his contributions to the Dharmic scenario.

The Legend Surrounding His Samadhi
Adi Shankara breathed his last near the Kedarnath temple, where his samadhi is erected today. During his visit to the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand, he was spotted behind the Kedarnath temple and was seen walking away towards Himalayas until he was untraceable. The Samadhi attracts hordes of curious visitors from all over India, especially those who know about his life and events.
Adi Shankara was believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva who took birth to establish the precepts of Sanatana dharma and Advaita Vedanta (philosophy). He was the founder of the Smartha cult in Brahmins who worship him as their Adiguru. Sringeri matha in Karnataka is one of the most important places of pilgrimage for the Smartha brahmins.

Four Mathas Established By Adi Shankara
Adi Shankaracharya was an erudite scholar who was a living legend and he performed miracles apart from preaching Sanatana Dharma and Advaita. He established four mathas one of which is in Sringeri, by the name Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthana Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peeta, Sringeri, Karnataka. The other mathas are at Badrinath. Dwarka, and Puri.

Sringeri Matha Of Adi Shankara
Sringeri is where Brahmanism is alive in all its glorious colours and this is where any brahmin you can spot on the street happens to be a trained expert in scriptures and Vedas. Sringeri is where Shankaracharya's precepts are being followed judiciously. He travelled as far as the Himalayas and built the Kedarnath temple in the 8th century AD after he had established the four mathas.

Renovation Of The Samadhi
It was a very small insignificant structure earlier but was later renovated by Shanakacharya of Dwarka and Jyotir Peeth. They added a statue and spatika lingam to the construction way back in 2006. The samadhi is made of black stone and has a garden surrounding the area. The samadhi is 600 meters from Kedarnath temple and at a walkable distance. Wear sturdy walking shoes, carry water and snacks as the walk is a bit tiring.

The Miraculous Powers Of The Spatika Lingam
Spatika lingam is a trigonal crystal which is one part silicon and 2 parts of oxygen. A mystical healing crystal, this removes all curses and bad karma of the individual. Somehow during the floods of 2013, most of the samadhi and temple vanished from sight.

The Hot Water Spring
His final moments came on when he journeyed from Jyotirmath Ashram at Badrinath to the slops of Kedarnath. As a response to the request from his disciples who found the weather conditions very harsh to bear with, he created a hot water spring for his devotees to relieve themselves of the problems due to extreme weather
