Chaitra Navratri 2024 Day 3: Date
On the third day of Navratri, i.e. 11 April, Thursday, Goddess Chandraghanta, the third form of Maa Durga, is worshipped. In this form of the mother, an hour-shaped crescent moon is adorned on her forehead, hence the form of the mother is called Chandraghanta.

Goddess Chandraghanta is the personified valour who has a tigress as her vehicle. She wears a crescent-shaped Tika (tilak) on her forehead, that resembles the structure of a bell. This is the reason why she was named Chandraghanta. She has ten arms that carry Trishul, Gada, Sword and Kamandal in her four left hands and displays varada mudra in her fifth left hand. On her five hands on the right, she carries the lotus flower, Arrow, Dhanush and Japa Mala in her four hands and preserves the fifth hand for blessing her devotees with Abhay mudra.

According to the popular legend, Goddess Durga took the avatar of Mother Chandraghanta when the terror of demons had started increasing. At that time, a fierce war was going on between Mahishasura and the gods. Mahishasura wanted to get the throne of Devraj Indra. He wanted to rule the heavenly world and to fulfill this desire he was waging war.

When the gods came to know about his intention, they became worried and went before Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh became very angry after hearing the words of the gods. When angry, energy came out of the mouths of all three of them. A goddess incarnated from that energy. Lord Shankar provided his trident, Lord Vishnu his chakra, Indra his bell, Surya his glory, sword and lion to that goddess. After this, Mother Chandraghanta protected the gods by killing Mahishasura.

After completing morning rituals, place the idol of Mother Chandraghanta on the chowki, and perform Ganesh Puja initially after which commence the Devi Puja. One can perform Panchopachara puja while reciting the mantras listed below.

Sweets prepared using cow milk or any kheer can be offered. Otherwise, fruits, coconut, bananas, paan, and supari are the other alternatives. Devotees pray for her blessings while offering the bhog to the Goddess. Light a Diya with camphor and perform aarti. Distribute the prasad to everyone.
