Assam's Interesting History
Assam is a state with a interesting history that remains largely obscured to the rest of the country. It has several landmarks that speak for its uniqueness in myriad ways. Have you heard of Kazhiranga park, the Jatinga island, the kamakhya temple, and the Mayang hub for witchcrafts? They are famous spots belonging to Assam. The finest quality of tea and silks are produced here. Did you know Assam has a state Anthem? It is one of the two states that have their own state anthem, the other one being Karnataka.
Who Wrote It?
The song "O Mur Apunar Dekh" , the rendition of which thrills you to the bones, was actually written by Lakshmi nath Bezbarua, and tunes composed by Kamala Prasad Agarwala. This song gives you a glimpse into the soul of Assam and the Assamese patriotism in a nutshell.
Who Was Lakshminath Bezbarua?
Why was his poem chosen to represent Assam? He was a poet, novelist and playwright of modern Assamese literature and his genius and genre of writing belonged to the Jonaki era which was the age of romanticism in the literature of Assam. He was a prolific writer and a forerunner in the world of Modern Assamese literature. His writing was essentially modern as he had weaned himself away from the influences of old Assamese school of writing. This poem by Lakshmi nath was originally published in the Magazine Bahi in the year 1909. O Mur Apunar Dex when translated to English means "O my endearing motherland"..
How Old Is It?
This song, is now translated into many dialects of the North East. it was officially declared as the song of Assam at the Assam Student Conference ( asom chatrô sônmilôn ) that was held in Tezpur in 1927. So it has a very old history to it. This song shows the patriotic side of the people of Assam. In the context of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Government of India has added the Assamese State song to the "Melodies of Freedom" initiative, wherein 21 states have been represented in the "Melodies of Freedom" venture.
