Bihu 2023: Mekhala-Chador, The Stunning Bihu Dance Attire
Bihu, the grandest of festivals observed in Assam, can be categorized into three types namely Bogah Bihu, Kati Bihu and Magh Bihu. Rongali Bihum arrives in April while Kati Bihu falls in October and Magh Bihu in January.

The most important Bihu date is the one that coincides with the new year and the arrival of spring, and it is called the Rongali Bihu. Magh and Bhogali Bihu are about celebrating varieties of food and are also important from historical point of view.
Bihu Sports
Bhog in some languages means naivedyam or prasada. Here it refers to joy of eating food and this is where the word Bhogali Bihu originates from. Coming in Middle of January, it celebrates the successful completion of the harvest. People have plenty of grains to extensively feast from., Many interesting sports, especially the adventurous ones like Nightingale fight, Buffalo fight, Cock fight, Egg fight and many more are played without any stop. These three Bihus are occasions to unanimously enjoy and celebrate Krishna's leelas. People from all creed and sect participate without any discrimination on this day.
Bihu Dance Costumes
The dance with its traditional flavor and techniques that keep the viewers spell bound, are actually the cultural imprints or legacy of Assam that is handed down from generation to generation. Bihu is otherwise a welcoming ritual for the harvest season in Assam. The dance attire of Assamese looks rather complicated and colour, and a stream of doubts about the process of wearing it, crosses our minds. The attires are meant to allow free movement of hands and feet and are practically easy to wear. These simple costumes are matched with fitting pieces of jewellery as well.
Colourful Costumes
Bihu is is played by both who dance together usually but at times, their dance moves are created as per their gender. While males wear a cotton dhoti, which comes as drapes that cover the lower portion of the body. The Gamocha can be used in two ways, as a head band and as a waist band to add a more vibrant touch to the attire.
The garment that covers the lower body in the case of female dancers is known as Mekhala, and the cloth that is used to cover the upper body is referred to as Chador. The attire is embellished by the use of striking pieces of jewellery and the blouses worn inside provide comfort to the wearer. They wear plenty of flowers on their hair, that are in sync with the colour of their dress combination and this completes the Bihu dancers look to commemorate the season.
