Freedom, The Way Of The Buddha

By Cara

Buddha wanted His disciples to be self reliant. In Dhammapada, Buddha says, “One is one's own refuge, who else could be the refuge?' (XII 4)

A small anecdote reveals the aforesaid truth.

A monk once approached Buddha and told Him that he wanted to leave.the master's fold. Gautama Buddha asked, “Tell me, O Bikshu, Did I ever say to you, “O come be under my guidance"?

The monk replied in negative.

Buddha continued, “Or did you ever tell me, Lord I will be under your guidance?"

The monk once again replied in the negative.

Freedom thus went with the Buddhist way on the path of realising the truth. He stressed on the blossoming of awareness and consciousness in His disciples. True freedom or the ultimate release arises from self reliance on discovering one's true nature.
