Soyen Shaku's Rules

Soyen Shaku was the first Zen teacher to go to America. He said “My heart burns like fire but my eyes are as cold as dead ashes"

He made the following rules and adhered to them strictly.

  • In the morning, light an incense and meditate before getting dressed.
  • Retire at a regular time and take food at regular intervals. Eat moderately and never to the point of satisfaction.
  • Receive a guest with the same attitude you have when alone. When alone have the attitude you have while receiving guests.
  • Watch your words, and whatever you say see to it you practice it.
  • Do not let any opportunity pass by, but always think twice before acting. Never regret the past. Look to the future.
  • Your attitude should be as fearless as of a hero and the heart of a loving child.
  • When retiring to bed, sleep as if you are getting into your last sleep. Upon waking up, leave your bed immediately as if you have cast away a pair of old shoes.
