Short Story, Perfect Practice
A dramatic ballad singer learned the art under a very strict teacher who instructed him to rehearse the same passage from the same song for months. He was not allowed to move any further in his lesson. Tired and frustrated, the student ran away in search of another profession.

The run away student, one night halted at an inn where he came upon a recitation contest. He decided casually to take part in the contest having nothing to lose. Soon his voice broke forth into a mellifluous rendering. It was the same passage that his master had got him to practise in successful repetitions.

When he had completed, the sponsor of the contest showered him with praises and refused to believe that he was an amateur in singing despite his embarrassed objections. He said " Tell me who your instructor is. He must be a great master".

The student was none other than the great performer Koshiji.
