The Departed Silence

By Staff

Silence, Zen Story
Shoichi , the one-eyed, enlightened Zen master taught his disciples in Tofuku temple. The whole temple was silent day and night as Shoichi taught through silence. The disciples did not have anything to do other than to meditate.

Shoichi did not even entertain the recitation of sutras and silent meditation was the only activity.

One day after Shoichi's passing away, an old neighbour heard the pealing of the bells in the temple followed by the recitation of the sutras.

She then came to know that Shoichi had departed.
