Once some Japanese soldiers who were engaged in a sham attack wanted to make Gasan's temple their headquarters.

Gasan ordered his cook "Let the officers also have the simple food that we eat"

Gasan's instructions infuriated the soldiers. One of them told Gasan : " Who do you think we are? We are soldiers who sacrifice our lives for the sake of our country. Why can't you treat us more better?"

Gasan retorted back sternly "Who do you think we are ? We are also soldiers, soldiers of humanity aiming to save all sentient beings !"
