Akshaya Tritiya 2023: How Is Akshaya Tritiya Celebrated In North India
Akshaya Tritiya is a day that holds immense significance for devotees. This day is deemed lucky for any new beginnings or purchase of gold in any form. Mainly Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated for initiating gold purchase on this day. Any new business or a construction of a new home can be started on this day. Not only gold purchase, even holy rites, rituals and charitable acts are encouraged to be performed on this day.

Akshaya Tritiya is a major festival that is celebrated grandly in Odisha, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Different customs and traditions that are specific to particular regions are observed in these states while celebrating Akshaya Tritiya.
West Bengal
It is a great new beginning for People of West Bengal who buy long term assets like gold and silver on this day. In order to enhance the luck, puja to Goddess Lakshmi is performed. Bengalis mark this day for celebrating new beginnings, businesses, or even performing Bhumi puja for their new construction. Upanayana is the only observance that is taboo on this day. Housewarming and ending of fast are prohibited on this day.
Maharashtra
Maharashtra celebrates this festival with great verve. Women especially, pray to Goddess Lakshmi for the wellbeing and longevity of their husbands. Turmeric and Kumkum are exchanged between married ladies. This is believed to improve the marital bliss between the couple. Married ladies get together, worship Goddess Gauri, and exchange sweets and fruits.
Odisha
The preparations for constructing the chariot and conducting the rath yatra begins with great fanfare and pomp. Rath yatra begins on the Akshaya Tritiya. This is also referred to as 'Muthi Chhuan' in western part of Odisha. Consuming green leaves is not encouraged on this day. Farmers start ploughing their field on this day.. In Odisha, during the Akshaya Tritiya, rice paddy is sown to ensure Kharif season. As a first ritual of the day, mother Earth is worshipped. Also the bullocks. Seeds and farm equipments are also worshipped to eke a good harvest that year.
Uttar Pradesh
The most lavishly celebrated festival in Uttar Pradesh is the Akshaya Tririya. Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan celebrates Akshaya Tritiya by unveiling the feet of Banke Bihari on this day for the darshan of the Bhaktas. The day of Akshaya Tritiya is the day the world was created as per the scriptures. Sandal wood paste is applied on the idols of Krishna. Cucumber, aamras, and laddus are offered as prasad to deity.
